GXO Logistics, Inc., the leading global contract logistics provider, has announced the initiation of a groundbreaking proof-of-concept pilot featuring Agility Robotics’ cutting-edge human-centric robot, “Digit.” This innovative robotic technology is currently undergoing testing at SPANX’s facility in Flowery Branch, Ga., where GXO oversees warehouse operations for the renowned global womenswear brand, managing both direct-to-consumer and in-store orders.
Adrian Stoch, Chief Automation Officer at GXO, expressed enthusiasm for this pioneering venture, stating, “We’re thrilled to take this bold step with Agility in advancing technology within warehouse operations. As a frontrunner in innovation, GXO collaborates with global tech leaders to develop and implement technologies that enhance safety, efficiency, productivity, and employee engagement in supply chain operations.”
Digit, standing at 5’9″ tall, weighing 140 pounds, and capable of lifting to 35 pounds, is specifically designed to operate seamlessly in human spaces, with the flexibility to adapt to various warehouse tasks through software updates.
Jonathan Hurst, co-founder and Chief Robot Officer at Agility Robotics remarked, “Multi-purpose robots capable of operating in human spaces will play a crucial role in our future, and we’re excited to partner with GXO to develop this technology for application in the supply chain industry. Importantly, there’s no need for warehouse redesign or additional infrastructure installation beyond what is already designed around human interactions.”
The collaboration between Agility Robotics and GXO aims to teach Digit to perform repetitive tasks, such as transferring totes from autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) and placing them onto conveyors. This reduction in repetitive actions not only minimizes strain and enhances safety for team members but also enables them to focus on more value-added tasks in the warehouse. GXO’s recent survey validates increased engagement and higher job satisfaction among team members when working with technology. If the initial phase proves successful, plans are underway to expand Digit’s role in various capacities in 2024.
Kuralamudhan Arutselvan, Director of Automation and Innovation at GXO, emphasized, “This pilot program represents another significant milestone in our journey to enhance the work environment for our employees while optimizing operations through innovative tech solutions.”
Christy Hillier, Senior Director of Operations at GXO, expressed excitement about the evolving automation that can efficiently handle repetitive tasks, working collaboratively with associates to create a more positive workplace experience. To witness Digit in action, click here.
