Air New Zealand and Singapore Airlines Expand Joint Network with Increased Capacity and New Christchurch–Singapore Services
Air New Zealand (NZ) and Singapore Airlines (SIA) have announced a significant expansion of their joint network between New Zealand and Singapore for the Northern Winter 2026 season, spanning 25 October 2026 to 27 March 2027. The enhanced schedule will deliver increased capacity into Auckland and introduce new non-stop services from Christchurch operated by Air New Zealand, complementing Singapore Airlines’ existing operations.
The expansion underscores the two carriers’ long-standing partnership and their shared commitment to meeting rising travel demand between New Zealand and key international markets across Asia and Europe. By strengthening frequency, capacity, and connectivity, the airlines aim to provide customers with greater convenience, improved flexibility, and a wider range of premium travel options across their integrated network.
Stronger Connectivity Between New Zealand and Asia-Pacific Markets
The joint venture between Air New Zealand and Singapore Airlines has long served as a critical air bridge connecting New Zealand to Singapore’s position as one of the world’s most important aviation hubs. With this latest expansion, the partnership is set to deepen its role in facilitating both inbound and outbound travel for business and leisure passengers.
Singapore’s strategic geographic location allows seamless onward connections to Southeast Asia, India, the United Kingdom, Europe, and other global destinations through Singapore Airlines’ extensive network. The increased capacity is expected to further enhance New Zealand’s accessibility to international markets, while also making it easier for global travellers to reach New Zealand’s key destinations.
New Christchurch–Singapore Non-Stop Services
A major highlight of the expanded schedule is Air New Zealand’s introduction of three weekly non-stop services between Singapore and Christchurch during the Northern Winter 2026 season. These flights will be operated using Boeing 787 aircraft, marking an important addition to the airline’s international long-haul operations from the South Island.
When combined with Singapore Airlines’ existing Christchurch services of up to 12 weekly flights, the two carriers will jointly operate 15 weekly services during peak travel months from November 2026 through February 2027. This represents a significant enhancement in connectivity for Christchurch and the wider South Island region, which has seen growing demand from both tourism and business sectors.
The introduction of direct services from Christchurch to Singapore is expected to boost inbound tourism to popular South Island destinations such as Queenstown, Christchurch, and the broader Canterbury region, while also providing improved outbound connectivity for New Zealand travellers heading to Asia and beyond.
Increased Capacity on Auckland Services
In addition to the Christchurch expansion, Air New Zealand will increase its Auckland–Singapore services by adding four weekly flights. These services will be operated using a combination of Boeing 777 and Boeing 787 aircraft, strengthening capacity on one of the airline’s most important long-haul routes.
Singapore Airlines will also adjust its Auckland schedule during the same period, reducing frequency from three daily flights to two. However, this change will be offset by a significant upgrade in aircraft deployment. The airline will operate the Airbus A380 on daily services SQ285 and SQ286 throughout the Northern Winter 2026 season, replacing the Boeing 777-300ER on these routes.
The A380 deployment introduces a notable increase in seat capacity and onboard product offering, reinforcing the airline’s commitment to delivering a premium travel experience in the New Zealand market.
Premium Travel Experience with Airbus A380
Singapore Airlines’ Airbus A380 remains one of the most recognisable and premium aircraft in commercial aviation. On services to Auckland, the aircraft will feature a four-class configuration, offering a total of 471 seats. This includes six Suites, 78 Business Class seats, 44 Premium Economy seats, and 343 Economy Class seats.
The deployment of the A380 is expected to significantly enhance passenger comfort and capacity while also catering to strong demand across multiple travel segments, including premium leisure, corporate travel, and connecting long-haul journeys. The aircraft’s spacious cabin design, advanced in-flight entertainment systems, and high service standards are expected to further elevate the customer experience on the New Zealand–Singapore route.
Significant 17% Increase in Total Seat Capacity
With the combined changes from both airlines, the Air New Zealand–Singapore Airlines joint venture will deliver a substantial increase in overall capacity between Singapore and New Zealand. Total seat availability is expected to rise by 17% from late October 2026, equating to an additional 72,000 seats across the network.
This expansion will bring total seat capacity to more than 490,000 seats for the 2026 Northern Winter season. The increase reflects not only growing demand but also the strength and maturity of the partnership between the two carriers, which continues to evolve to meet shifting global travel patterns.
The additional capacity is expected to benefit a wide range of travellers, including tourists, business passengers, students, and those visiting friends and family, while also supporting trade and economic ties between New Zealand and key international markets.
Leadership Commentary on the Expansion
Air New Zealand’s Chief Operations and Alliances Officer, Michael Williams, highlighted the importance of the partnership in strengthening New Zealand’s global connectivity.
He noted that the expanded schedule would provide customers with more travel choices and improved access to both domestic and international destinations. According to Williams, the introduction of Christchurch services is particularly significant, as it opens new pathways for international visitors to explore South Island destinations while remaining connected to Singapore Airlines’ global network.
“Our partnership with Singapore Airlines plays a critical role in connecting the world to New Zealand and vice versa,” Williams said. “This Northern Winter expansion gives our customers even more travel options, whether they are visiting New Zealand for business, leisure, or to reconnect with friends and family.”
He also emphasised the strategic importance of Singapore as a global transit hub, enabling travellers from Southeast Asia, India, Europe, and the United Kingdom to access New Zealand more efficiently.
Singapore Airlines’ Senior Vice President Marketing Planning, Dai Haoyu, also reaffirmed the strength of the partnership, noting that demand for travel between New Zealand and Singapore continues to grow steadily.
He highlighted that the introduction of the Airbus A380 to Auckland reflects the airline’s commitment to the market, offering both increased seat capacity and an enhanced onboard experience.
“Our long-standing partnership with Air New Zealand serves the strong demand for travel between New Zealand and Singapore, as well as onward to key destinations across our global network,” Dai said. He added that the capacity increase complements Air New Zealand’s own expansion efforts, ensuring that customers continue to benefit from a wide range of travel options.
Flights under the expanded Air New Zealand–Singapore Airlines Northern Winter 2026 schedule are available for booking now, subject to regulatory approval. The new services will officially commence at the end of October 2026.
The expansion marks another milestone in the deepening partnership between the two carriers, which has consistently focused on improving connectivity, enhancing customer experience, and strengthening aviation links between New Zealand and the rest of the world.
As global travel demand continues to recover and grow, the joint venture is expected to play an increasingly important role in supporting tourism, business travel, and international connectivity for New Zealand.
