According to the International Council on Clean Transportation, around 600,000 chargers are projected to support 1.1 million class 4-8 M/HD ZEVs by 2030, consuming 140,000 megawatt-hours daily. This is equivalent to the daily energy usage of 4.9 million American homes.
Powering America’s Commercial Transportation (“PACT”), a coalition spearheaded by Daimler Truck North America, Navistar, Inc., and Volvo Group North America, aims to expedite the development of nationwide infrastructure for medium- and heavy-duty zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs). Representing about 70% of all new M/HD truck sales in the U.S., these OEMs are committed to ambitious electrification goals. PACT seeks to overcome barriers hindering ZEV infrastructure access and enhance national climate policies for M/HD ZEVs.
Membership is open to all stakeholders, including other OEMs, infrastructure developers, electric utilities, grid operators, and more. Founding members include ABB E-mobility, Burns & McDonnell, Greenlane™, J.B. Hunt Transport, Inc., Prologis Inc., and Voltera.
Unlike the focus on light-duty vehicles in the U.S., PACT addresses the unique considerations of M/HDs, emphasizing capital investment, electrical grid upgrades, and dedicated charging equipment. The International Council on Clean Transportation estimates that nearly 600,000 chargers are needed to support 1.1 million class 4-8 M/HD ZEVs by 2030, consuming 140,000 megawatt-hours daily.
John O’Leary, President and CEO of Daimler Truck North America, stressed the importance of PACT in decarbonizing the commercial transportation sector and overcoming the stall in zero-emission vehicle adoption due to insufficient charging infrastructure. Mathias Carlbaum, President and CEO of Navistar, emphasized the collaborative effort needed to provide effective power for large-scale ZEV fleet deployment. Stephen Roy, Chairman of Volvo Group North America, highlighted PACT’s role in promoting best practices for a seamless and cost-effective transition.
PACT, while supporting commercial ZEV infrastructure deployment, refrains from advocating specific technologies. It focuses on educating stakeholders about infrastructure challenges and collaborating on solutions for the benefit of all involved parties, championing practical and efficient infrastructure solutions for increasing M/HD ZEV deployments.
About Powering America’s Commercial Transportation
Powering America’s Commercial Transportation (PACT) is the unified voice for medium- and heavy-duty (M/HD) zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) infrastructure, bringing together all ZEV stakeholders, including original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), commercial fleets, infrastructure developers, electric utilities, policymakers and regulators, and NGOs. PACT is committed to advancing America’s zero-emission transportation goals by accelerating the deployment of nationwide infrastructure for M/HD ZEVs.
