Earlier this week, DP World in Posorja, Ecuador, celebrated the inauguration of the first of three pivotal service routes for Maersk. In a recent announcement, Maersk revealed its decision to redirect three service routes from the Port of Guayaquil to the deep-water terminal at the Port of Posorja starting January 2024.
The shift to Posorja stemmed from a comprehensive technical analysis evaluating efficiency, productivity, and deepwater capabilities. Posorja’s impressive draft of over 15 meters enables it to accommodate ultra-large container ships (ULCS), including those with capacities up to 22,000 TEUs. This facilitates the deployment of larger capacity vessels by shipping lines, exemplified by Maersk’s AC2 service incorporating vessels with capacities of 13,000 and 15,000 TEUs.
In the realm of maritime transport, ship size and scale have become crucial indicators of efficiency and sustainability. The increased capacities of ULCS contribute to fuel efficiency through economies of scale, leading to reduced CO2 emissions per container. This strategic move establishes the Port of Posorja, Ecuador, as a pivotal facilitator for maritime trade across Latin America, Asia, and Europe.
The Container Port Performance Index (CPPI) for 2022 positioned DP World Posorja as the second most-efficient port in Central America, South America, and the Caribbean, and 19th globally.
Morten Johansen, Chief Operating Officer of DP World Americas, emphasized, “Maersk’s decision to choose Posorja as a new hub for its operations reflects our ongoing commitment to maintaining a high level of productivity, with minimal port congestion and cost-effectiveness for our customers. Our ability to guarantee service levels and provide exceptional security has been crucial in cementing this long-standing partnership with Maersk.”
This strategic move aligns Maersk with other industry leaders like Hapag-Lloyd and CMA CGM, capitalizing on the advantageous features offered by DP World Posorja.
