Eaton Partners with Miami to Modernize Metromover Infrastructure

Eaton, an intelligent power management company, is partnering with Miami-Dade Transportation & Public Works to upgrade the electrical system supporting the Metromover, a key component of the county’s mass transit system. In 2023, the Metromover served over 6.5 million riders. The project, funded in part by the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA), is part of Miami-Dade County’s broader $153 million effort to expand and improve the reliability of its automated train network, with completion expected by early 2025.

“The future of transportation is increasingly electric, and we’re excited to support the large-scale infrastructure projects that will make it a reality,” said Igor Stamenkovic, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Eaton’s Electrical Engineering Services & Systems division. “By modernizing existing energy systems to be smarter, safer, and more resilient, we’re helping Miami-Dade prepare for the future without the need for a full infrastructure overhaul.”

Eaton’s solutions will enable the transit authority to monitor and manage its electrical systems more effectively, enhancing uptime and reliability. The company’s digitalization approach offers real-time insights into equipment health and early warnings of potential issues, helping to prevent costly downtime.

As part of the modernization effort, Eaton will supply low-voltage air replacement circuit breakers and motor control components to revitalize 21 aging electrical substations. Eaton’s retrofit capabilities will increase the electrical capacity, reliability, and safety of the Metromover, supporting its expansion plans without the need for extensive substation replacements or additional space.

Eaton, committed to environmental sustainability and improving quality of life, provides products for a wide range of markets, including data centers, utilities, aerospace, and residential sectors. By focusing on electrification and digitalization, the company is driving the transition to renewable energy, addressing critical power management challenges, and helping to create a more sustainable future for current and future generations.
