NETS Announces the Winners of the 2024 Road Safety Achievement Awards

The Network of Employers for Traffic Safety (NETS) is excited to announce the winners of its 2024 Road Safety Achievement Awards. This prestigious recognition highlights the outstanding efforts of companies dedicated to improving road safety in the workplace and reducing traffic-related accidents. At NETS’ annual Strength IN Numbers Fleet Safety Benchmark Conference, the organization honored three member companies for their exceptional commitment to advancing road safety. The recipients of the awards include Amazon, Sunbelt Rentals, and Syngenta, each demonstrating remarkable achievements in their respective safety initiatives.

The International Road Safety Award was presented to Amazon, one of the world’s largest transportation networks, for its innovative safety measures and cutting-edge use of technology. Amazon manages a vast fleet, overseeing the safety of more than 160,000 trailers, which is a monumental task requiring meticulous attention to detail. In a move toward improving safety standards, Amazon transitioned from traditional paper-based safety checklists to a sophisticated digital application. This shift has significantly enhanced the company’s ability to conduct proactive safety checks, ensuring that all trailers are properly loaded and secured before transport.

The digital app integrates advanced artificial intelligence (AI) and computer vision technology, which analyzes photos to verify that trailers are properly loaded and cargo is secure. This technology not only streamlines the safety-check process but also allows for real-time analysis of potential risks. Amazon’s approach has led to measurable improvements in workplace safety, reducing the chances of accidents and ensuring safer operations across its massive transportation network.

The Overall Road Safety Award was awarded to Sara Wojcik from Sunbelt Rentals for her development and implementation of the Driver Risk Profile Program. Sara has been a driving force behind Sunbelt Rentals’ efforts to enhance safety by creating detailed, data-driven driver profiles. By aggregating and centralizing data from across the organization, Sara was able to develop comprehensive risk profiles for individual drivers. These profiles provide valuable insights into driver behavior, enabling Sunbelt Rentals to identify potential risks and tailor safety training accordingly.

Beyond her data-driven approach, Sara also initiated a Transportation Safety Summit, which fosters collaboration and knowledge-sharing among industry leaders. This summit serves as a platform for exchanging best practices, setting higher safety standards, and improving transportation safety across the industry. Thanks to these programs, Sunbelt Rentals has seen a significant reduction in accidents, further solidifying the company’s commitment to improving road safety.

The Women in Fleet Award was introduced this year to recognize exceptional female leaders in fleet safety, and it was presented to Pam Chandler of Syngenta for her work in the Syngenta North America Fleet Modernization project. Pam has been instrumental in leading Syngenta’s fleet safety initiatives, focusing on the integration of emerging technologies that enhance both safety and efficiency. Her leadership in introducing hands-free driving technology has been a game-changer for Syngenta’s North American fleet operations.

Under Pam’s guidance, Syngenta has seen a remarkable 50% improvement in its crash rate over the past five years. This achievement is a testament to Pam’s commitment to fostering a culture of safety within the organization. Additionally, Syngenta’s fleet has consistently ranked in the top quarter of the NETS benchmark report for crash metrics, further highlighting the company’s success in reducing accidents and improving driver safety.

Susan Hipp, NETS’ Executive Director, emphasized the importance of collaboration in achieving road safety goals: “Improving fleet safety and reducing crashes is a collaborative effort; it takes all of us working together to ensure everyone on the road comes home safely every day.” The NETS Board of Directors expressed their pride in being able to recognize the outstanding contributions of these companies and individuals, whose dedication to road safety sets a high standard for others to follow.

These awards not only highlight the impressive achievements of Amazon, Sunbelt Rentals, and Syngenta but also serve as a reminder of the ongoing work needed to ensure safer roads for everyone. Through innovative technologies, data-driven safety programs, and a commitment to collaboration, these companies are leading the way in making road safety a top priority.
