U-Haul Acquires Phoenix’s 3rd Tallest Skyscraper at 20 E. Thomas Rd

U-Haul® Holding Company has announced the acquisition of one of Arizona’s most prominent skyscrapers, located at 20 E. Thomas Road in Midtown Phoenix. The 25-story, 548,938-square-foot structure will serve as the future headquarters for U-Haul International and its subsidiaries. The acquisition, finalized on December 6, rebrands the building as The U-Haul Tower.

This high-rise, formerly known as the CenturyLink® Tower, stands 397 feet tall, making it the tallest building in Midtown Phoenix and the third-tallest in Arizona, following Downtown Phoenix’s Chase® Tower and U.S. Bank® Center. Built in 1989, the tower will anchor the expanding U-Haul Midtown Campus.

Strategic Transition

Over the next 24 months, U-Haul plans a phased relocation of its field-support teams from the current headquarters at 2727 N. Central Avenue, just one block away. This move reinforces the company’s ongoing commitment to Midtown Phoenix, where it has operated since relocating from Portland in 1967. The company employs 1,600 team members at its Midtown Campus and more than 34,000 across North America.

“Our move to Midtown Phoenix’s tallest building symbolizes the leadership position our team has established over the past eight decades,” said Sam Shoen, Vice Chair of U-Haul Holding Company. “The U-Haul Tower will become a hub for the Valley’s premier workforce as we look to the future.”

Deep Roots in the Community

U-Haul’s history in Phoenix dates back to 1967, when it moved into the iconic Central Towers, twin 11-story buildings. In 1970, the company expanded to Tempe, opening a Technical Center for product design and assembly. The Midtown Campus has since flourished, featuring notable additions like the 54,208-square-foot Shoen Family Conference and Fitness Center, a state-of-the-art corporate wellness facility.

Joe Shoen, Chairman of U-Haul Holding Company, reflected on the company’s growth: “When my father relocated U-Haul to Phoenix in 1967, we envisioned a bright future. This acquisition enhances our efficiency at headquarters and strengthens our ability to support teams across North America.”

Industry Leadership

Founded in 1945 by L.S. Shoen and Anna Mary Carty Shoen, U-Haul has grown into an industry leader, serving millions of customers annually across 23,000 U.S. and Canadian locations. It operates over 1 million self-storage units and is preparing to celebrate its 80th anniversary in 2025.

The acquisition of The U-Haul Tower, facilitated by Kidder Mathews broker Ryan Eustice and Cushman & Wakefield brokers Eric Wichterman, Chris Toci, and Mike Coover, marks a significant step forward for the company’s operations and legacy.
