SLB (NYSE: SLB), a global leader in energy technology, has announced that its OneSubsea™ joint venture has secured a contract from Petrobras to deliver two subsea raw water injection (RWI) systems for enhanced oil recovery at the Búzios field, one of the most productive in Brazil.
The subsea RWI systems will boost the production capacity of floating production, storage, and offloading (FPSO) vessels, which currently face limitations due to insufficient water injection capabilities. By deploying these systems, Petrobras aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions per barrel of oil produced, as the RWI method is more efficient for pressurizing the reservoir compared to traditional top water injection systems, leading to improved oil recovery.
“As deepwater fields mature, we are seeing increasing opportunities for secondary recovery methods,” said Mads Hjelmeland, CEO of SLB OneSubsea. “Subsea raw seawater injection is a proven solution with significant commercial value, and we believe it has the potential to become a standard practice. By positioning the system directly on the seafloor, we not only save space on the FPSO but also reduce its fuel and power consumption. This is a mutually beneficial development for Petrobras, and we are excited to be part of it. With our advanced manufacturing and subsea service facilities in Brazil, this contract strengthens our local presence in the region.”
Under the terms of the contract, SLB OneSubsea will deliver two fully integrated subsea RWI systems to enhance the capabilities of Petrobras’ P-74 and P-75 FPSOs. Each system will include a subsea seawater injection pump, an umbilical system, and a topside variable speed drive.
Additionally, SLB OneSubsea will expand its local workforce to support the project, covering the entire process from field development and systems engineering to long-term field support. The team will provide technical assistance through AI-enabled Subsea Live™ services, offering continuous condition monitoring and expert consulting.
