CMA Terminals Inauguration Boosts Khalifa Port’s Capacity by 23%, Reaching 10 Million TEUs

AD Ports Group (ADPORTS:AdX), a leader in integrated trade, transportation, and logistics solutions, has officially opened CMA Terminals at Khalifa Port. This state-of-the-art container terminal, valued at AED 3.1 billion ($845 million), is operated by a joint venture between CMA CGM Group’s subsidiary, CMA Terminals (70%), and AD Ports Group (30%).

The inauguration represents a significant milestone in the development of Khalifa Port, the flagship port of AD Ports Group. Since its opening in December 2012, Khalifa Port has rapidly evolved into one of the world’s fastest-growing and most efficient commercial ports.

CMA Terminals at Khalifa Port features cutting-edge infrastructure designed to enhance efficiency and sustainability. This includes automated gates and integrated systems, shore-based power for vessels to reduce emissions, multiple solar panel installations contributing to the terminal’s energy needs, and the region’s first zero-carbon administrative building, which is powered entirely by renewable energy. This building was awarded the 2022 Net Zero Building Project of the Year at the MENA Green Building Awards.

With the addition of this new facility, Khalifa Port’s annual container capacity increases by 23%, reaching nearly 10 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units). The new terminal is also equipped for rail connectivity, strengthening Khalifa Port’s status as a major regional trade gateway. Sustainability principles were central to the terminal’s construction, aligning with the UAE’s broader goals of fostering a circular economy, recycling materials, and reducing operational waste.

The new facility is equipped with eight advanced Ship to Shore (STS) cranes and 20 Electric Rubber Tire Gantry Cranes (e-RTG), solidifying Khalifa Port’s reputation as one of the most technologically advanced commercial ports globally and reinforcing Abu Dhabi’s leadership in sustainable and smart trade.

HE Mohamed Hassan Alsuwaidi, Chairman of AD Ports Group, remarked: “The launch of CMA Terminals at Khalifa Port underscores the UAE’s position as a prime investment destination and enhances its role as a key partner for global players. The terminal will drive increased trade and contribute to the long-term economic growth of Abu Dhabi and the UAE.”

Rodolphe Saadé, Chairman and CEO of CMA CGM Group, added: “The inauguration of our container terminal marks a key development in Khalifa Port, further cementing Abu Dhabi’s role as a global trading hub. This strategic infrastructure will boost regional shipping and logistics activities, and we are excited to partner with AD Ports Group in delivering a modern terminal focused on innovation and sustainability.”

Captain Mohamed Juma Al Shamisi, Managing Director and CEO of AD Ports Group, stated: “CMA Terminals at Khalifa Port will significantly enhance Abu Dhabi’s connectivity, reinforcing its strategic position in global trade and supporting local economic diversification in line with the leadership’s vision. This new facility establishes AD Ports Group among the world’s top port operators. We look forward to a long and successful partnership with CMA CGM, creating enduring economic benefits for the UAE and Abu Dhabi as we work together to shape a sustainable global transport future.”

The opening of CMA Terminals at Khalifa Port marks the completion of Phase 1 of CMA CGM’s terminal development, which includes an 800-meter quay wall, 18.5 meters deep, and eight STS cranes, adding 1.8 million TEUs of capacity to Khalifa Port.
