BNSF Railway Concludes Remarkable Year with Unprecedented Workplace Safety Achievements in 2023
In 2023, BNSF Railway marked a historic milestone in its 175-year history by achieving its best-ever workplace safety performance. With a workforce of 37,000 employees, the railway giant operated its extensive 32,500-mile network without any loss of life and recorded the lowest injury frequency rate on record. The year witnessed a remarkable reduction of over 20 percent in employee injury rates and nearly 35 percent in injury severity, positioning BNSF as an industry leader in safety.
Katie Farmer, President and CEO, expressed pride in the company’s significant progress, stating, “Our performance in 2023 is a giant step forward in bringing us closer to our ultimate safety vision of a workplace free of accidents and injuries.” She credited the accomplishment to the dedication and passion for safety exhibited by the entire BNSF team, particularly the Operations teams. Farmer extended gratitude to all employees for their commitment to safety, emphasizing that their dedication on the front lines contributed to this noteworthy milestone.
This stellar safety record in 2023 builds upon the groundbreaking Transportation Safety Agreement (TSA) established by BNSF in 2022 with its transportation workforce. The TSA has fostered enhanced collaboration and communication between management and employees, contributing to the positive safety outcomes.
Rich O’Connell, SMART-TD general chairman, highlighted the commitment of the membership to safety, stating, “Having those closest to the work lead this effort is showing positive results.” Rob Cunningham, Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen (BLET) general chairman, added, “We take great pride in our dedicated members who prioritize safety in their daily work. The successful collaboration between labor and management, as evidenced by the TSA, stands as a testament to our effective model.”
As BNSF looks ahead to 2024 and beyond, the company remains steadfast in its safety vision of creating a workplace completely free of accidents and injuries.
Matt Igoe, Executive Vice President and COO, expressed gratitude to the people of BNSF, stating, “Our commitment and passion for safety is something that sets the people of BNSF apart. The way we finished the year strong is clear proof of that. A special thanks to everyone who contributed throughout the year to take our safety performance to the next level.
