RXO Unveils New Research on Supply Chain Performance Metrics

RXO (NYSE: RXO), a leader in asset-light transportation solutions, has released groundbreaking research that provides insights into how 1,000 industry experts are setting and refining key performance indicators (KPIs) within the supply chain sector. This study explores how benchmarks have evolved since the COVID-19 pandemic, highlighting significant trends and shifts in logistics performance standards.

The Growing Importance of KPIs in Supply Chain Management

KPIs play a crucial role in ensuring effective supply chain management and driving continuous improvement. With the evolving nature of logistics, influenced by shifting consumer demands and technological advancements, these benchmarks are constantly being redefined.

“KPIs are essential for effective supply chain management and continuous improvement, and they’re always evolving,” said Ben Steffes, VP of Solutions & Strategy at RXO. “Shifts in consumer demand and an influx of technology are driving this change, in combination with the dynamic and fragmented nature of the freight market. To optimize performance, businesses need consistent measurement and reporting. We released this study to help shippers and carriers benchmark their standards against how their peers approach KPIs today.”

Insights from The Logistics Professional’s Guide to KPIs

RXO’s Logistics Professional’s Guide to KPIs, conducted in partnership with independent research firm Qualtrics, serves as an invaluable tool for shippers and carriers. It provides up-to-date industry benchmarks for critical transportation metrics, such as on-time delivery and primary tender acceptance.

This study updates The Metrics That Matter, a 2022 report originally published by Coyote Logistics (now part of RXO). The findings demonstrate how shippers and carriers are adjusting their approach to tracking and utilizing KPIs:

  • Shippers are increasingly data-driven – 86% of shippers reference logistics KPIs at least weekly (compared to 79% in 2022), and 45% monitor them daily (up from 32%).
  • Industry demand for standardized KPIs is rising – 87% of shippers and 90% of carriers believe there should be set industry KPI standards, an increase from 78% and 74% in 2022.
  • Performance benchmarks are slightly more lenient – While industry benchmarks for core KPIs like on-time performance and tender acceptance remain steady, the data indicates a slight shift toward more flexible standards.
  • Shippers-of-choice benefit from better rates and capacity – 95% of carriers state that inefficient shipping practices influence the rates they offer, while 99% consider a shipper’s KPI expectations before accepting a shipment.

The Role of Technology in KPI Management

Managing supply chain data is a complex challenge. Logistics professionals must decide which technologies to adopt, which metrics to track, and how to effectively use data to drive operational improvements. With input from 1,000 industry experts, RXO’s latest research provides valuable guidance for companies seeking to refine their logistics strategies.

“Managing supply chain data is incredibly important, but it’s not easy. What technology to use, which metrics to track, where to set benchmarks, how to leverage data to drive action – modern logistics professionals grapple with all these challenges. This study, with insights from 1,000 industry peers, offers a great tool to check their strategies against,” Steffes said.

By releasing this research, RXO continues to establish itself as a leader in providing data-driven freight market insights. The findings empower shippers and carriers to make smarter, more informed supply chain decisions based on industry best practices.
