Union Pacific Railroad is paying tribute to President Abraham Lincoln this Presidents Day by unveiling a special commemorative locomotive. Lincoln’s role in shaping the nation’s transportation infrastructure was pivotal—his signing of the Pacific Railway Act of 1862 laid the foundation for the transcontinental railroad, uniting the country and transforming its economy.
“America’s history is Union Pacific’s history,” said Union Pacific CEO Jim Vena. “By signing the Pacific Railway Act of 1862, President Lincoln created our railroad and ignited The Great Race to connect the country and fuel the economy—roles our industry still plays today.”
Rail’s Role in the U.S. Economy
Today, railroads continue to be a critical component of the nation’s economy, transporting approximately 59 tons of goods per American each year across 140,000 miles of privately owned tracks. These goods include essential commodities such as food, fuel, and raw materials that support industries across the country.

A Presidential Legacy on the Rails
The newly unveiled No. 1616 locomotive is Union Pacific’s second presidential tribute engine, joining No. 4141, which was dedicated to President George H.W. Bush. No. 4141 gained national recognition in 2018 when it led President Bush’s funeral train to his final resting place in Texas. Today, the locomotive is on permanent display at the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum.
The Lincoln locomotive, currently being painted by Union Pacific employees, will be officially unveiled at a special ceremony this spring. Its design features a color scheme inspired by Lincoln’s era, paying homage to Locomotive No. 119, one of the two historic locomotives present at Promontory Summit, Utah, during the completion of the first transcontinental railroad in 1869.
A Moving Tribute to Lincoln
As part of its mission to honor Lincoln’s legacy, No. 1616 will serve as a traveling ambassador, participating in community events and educational programs across the country. The locomotive will highlight the historic and ongoing contributions of railroads to America’s economy and infrastructure.
