The key advantage of Malloy’s platforms lies in their interchangeable capabilities, offering greater flexibility at a significantly reduced cost and time compared to traditional methods. This approach not only minimizes risks to expensive assets and human life but also positions these solutions as a cost-effective alternative in the rapidly evolving landscape of UAS technologies.
Malloy Aeronautics, with its workforce of approximately 80 professionals, will continue its operations from its Berkshire site, ensuring seamless support for its existing customer base. The collaboration between BAE Systems and Malloy, which began in 2021, will now intensify as both entities aim to enhance Malloy’s current portfolio and expedite the development of new and groundbreaking technologies for customers worldwide.
Simon Barnes, Group Managing Director of BAE Systems’ Air sector, emphasized the strategic importance of the acquisition, stating, “Our acquisition of Malloy Aeronautics is part of our ongoing strategy to develop and invest in breakthrough technologies which augment our existing capabilities and provide our customers with the innovation they need in response to evolving requirements.”
Oriol Badia, Chief Operating Officer of Malloy Aeronautics, expressed optimism about the collaboration, saying, “This new step in our journey with BAE Systems will allow us to combine the strengths and vision of a young company with the reach and support of an experienced one, ultimately giving our customers the ability to scale their demands and allow us to deliver innovative new products – including the T-650 – at pace.”
One notable project arising from the collaboration is the development of the 300kg T-650 all-electric ‘heavy lift’ UAS. This solution, envisioned as a cost-effective and sustainable rapid response capability, is set to cater to military, security, and civilian customers. The successful demonstration of the T-600 demonstrator aircraft carrying and releasing of a 200kg inert Sting Ray Training Variant Torpedo during a NATO exercise last year highlights the progress made in advancing UAS capabilities.
Malloy Aeronautics will become an integral part of FalconWorks, the research and development arm within BAE Systems’ Air sector. Dave Holmes, Managing Director of FalconWorks, commented on the acquisition, stating, “Malloy’s expertise and innovation in quadcopters and sustainable air vehicles is an exciting addition to our FalconWorks® family. This acquisition supports our commitment to increase our portfolio of products, offering new and existing customers the cutting-edge solutions they need.”
The collaboration between BAE Systems and Malloy Aeronautics marks a significant stride in the evolution of UAS technologies, promising innovative solutions and advancements in the field.
