Porter Airlines Launches New Direct Flights from Hamilton to Calgary and Edmonton
Porter Airlines is expanding its Canadian footprint with the launch of new non-stop flights connecting John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport (YHM) with Calgary International Airport (YYC) and Edmonton International Airport (YEG). These new services, which officially began on June 11, represent a significant milestone in Porter’s ongoing strategy to broaden its network and offer enhanced travel options across Canada.
With the addition of these two western Canadian routes, Porter is making it easier for passengers in southern Ontario to access Alberta’s major cities, while also enabling Western Canadians to explore the vibrant Hamilton and Golden Horseshoe region. These new connections are part of a broader expansion effort by Porter Airlines to create a more competitive and comfortable travel experience for domestic travelers.
Elevating the Passenger Experience
All flights on the new Hamilton-Calgary and Hamilton-Edmonton routes are operated using Porter’s modern Embraer E195-E2 aircraft. This next-generation aircraft seats 132 passengers in a comfortable two-by-two seating configuration, meaning no middle seats for anyone on board—a rarity in economy travel.
Passengers flying with Porter enjoy a unique “premium economy” experience even with standard fares, thanks to complimentary beer and wine served in real glassware, a curated selection of premium Canadian snacks, and fast, free Wi-Fi available to all passengers. This blend of comfort and value distinguishes Porter from many of its competitors in the domestic air travel market.
For travelers seeking an even more inclusive experience, the PorterReserve fare class is available. PorterReserve includes fresh, healthy meals on longer flights, extra legroom, priority check-in and security, and checked baggage—all bundled into the fare. Meanwhile, those opting for the PorterClassic fare can still customize their travel experience by purchasing additional amenities à la carte.

These new western routes follow closely behind Porter’s recent expansion of service from Hamilton to Halifax and Vancouver, both of which launched on June 3. With service now available to four major Canadian cities, Porter’s presence in Hamilton is becoming a vital part of the airline’s national strategy.
Expanding Options for the Golden Horseshoe Region

The launch of these new flights is a significant win for Hamilton and the surrounding Golden Horseshoe region. Historically overshadowed by Toronto Pearson International Airport, Hamilton is emerging as a key secondary airport for the Greater Toronto Area, offering travelers a more convenient and less congested alternative. Porter’s investment in the region further underscores its belief in Hamilton’s potential as a major hub for domestic travel.
In recent months, John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport has undergone upgrades to its terminal, enhancing passenger flow, comfort, and amenities. These improvements are aimed at supporting growing passenger volumes and aligning with the airport’s vision to become a more robust player in Canada’s aviation landscape.
Executive Perspectives
Andrew Pierce, Vice President of Network Planning and Reporting at Porter Airlines, expressed enthusiasm about the new routes.
“Today’s inaugural flights connecting Hamilton to Calgary and Edmonton demonstrate our continued investment in growing Porter’s presence in the region,” Pierce said. “These direct routes allow the Greater Hamilton community to explore Western Canada and provide travelers visiting southern Ontario with convenient access to Ontario’s wine country and all that the Golden Horseshoe has to offer.”
Ed Ratuski, General Manager at John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport, highlighted the broader impact on regional tourism and business.
“We are delighted to celebrate the launch of Porter’s non-stop service to Calgary and Edmonton, as well as the highly successful launch of service to Halifax and Vancouver last week,” Ratuski noted. “These new routes greatly enhance convenience for passengers traveling to and from Hamilton and Southern Ontario, opening the door to greater business and tourism opportunities. We are pleased our recent terminal enhancements will support a more comfortable and better-connected journey for all travelers.”
Chris Dinsdale, President and CEO of the Calgary Airports Authority, also commented on the benefits of Porter’s growing footprint in the West.
“Porter’s continued expansion in Calgary enhances our national network and creates new opportunities for travelers between Alberta and southern Ontario. We are proud to support this growth and look forward to further strengthening Canada’s air travel connections.”
From Edmonton’s perspective, the addition of the new route was equally welcomed.
“We are pleased to see Porter add a fourth non-stop destination from YEG with the addition of Hamilton,” said a representative from Edmonton International Airport. “This new route provides more choice and convenience for travelers in both directions. It’s now easier to explore this vibrant Great Lakes port city and its many attractions, while giving Ontario travelers seamless access to Edmonton’s dynamic offerings.”
Strategic Expansion and Market Impact
The expansion from Hamilton reflects Porter’s broader strategic vision to offer a comprehensive network of direct domestic routes that provide superior passenger experiences at competitive pricing. By leveraging the advanced capabilities of the E195-E2 aircraft, Porter can efficiently serve medium-to-long-haul routes that traditionally might have been underserved by other carriers.
Porter’s approach contrasts with ultra-low-cost carriers by emphasizing a higher baseline of service, even on its most basic fares. This model is resonating with Canadian travelers who are looking for an improved travel experience without the full cost of business-class travel.
By offering direct access from Hamilton to key cities in Alberta and beyond, Porter is helping to decentralize travel options in Canada. This reduces the strain on Toronto Pearson and supports regional airport growth, making travel more accessible and less time-consuming for residents across southern Ontario.
