JetBlue Launches Inaugural Flight to San Pedro Sula Today

JetBlue (NASDAQ: JBLU) today officially launched its first-ever daily nonstop service between New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and San Pedro Sula’s Ramón Villeda Morales International Airport (SAP) in Honduras. This milestone marks JetBlue’s debut in the Honduran market, strengthening the airline’s broader strategy to expand its footprint across Latin America and the Caribbean. The region now represents more than one-third of JetBlue’s total capacity, and this latest addition reinforces the airline’s ambition to connect underserved international markets with major U.S. metropolitan centers.

A Strategic Expansion into Central America

With the addition of Honduras, JetBlue continues its mission to offer affordable and customer-focused service to markets that have traditionally been underserved by other U.S. carriers. Daniel Shurz, JetBlue’s Senior Vice President of Network, Revenue and Enterprise Planning, emphasized the strategic importance of this launch. “We’re excited to add San Pedro Sula to JetBlue’s route map as we expand affordable, high-quality travel to underserved markets,” said Shurz. “This new route strengthens our presence in Central America and underscores our commitment to the region. We’re proud to offer New York travelers a new gateway to the culture and beauty of Honduras, while helping friends and relatives stay connected through the award-winning JetBlue experience.”

The route is also expected to boost the airline’s Visiting Friends and Relatives (VFR) network—a key segment that accounts for a significant share of demand between the U.S. and Latin America. For Hondurans living in the United States and particularly in the New York metropolitan area, the new daily nonstop service makes travel home easier, more accessible, and more reliable.

Honduran Government Welcomes JetBlue

The Honduran government has welcomed the new service as a positive sign of international confidence in the country’s development and its aviation infrastructure. “We welcome this new direct route to New York and celebrate it as a significant step in strengthening Honduras’s air connectivity,” said Malcolm Stufkens, Executive Secretary of Honduras’ National Airport Service. “It’s a clear reflection of the success of the public investment our government has made in modernizing our airport infrastructure. The arrival of JetBlue not only expands the options available to our citizens and visitors but also underscores the growing confidence in Honduras as a key destination for commerce, tourism, and investment.”

San Pedro Sula: A Vibrant Gateway to the Region

JetBlue becomes the only U.S. airline to offer regular daily nonstop service between New York City and San Pedro Sula, positioning itself as a preferred option for travelers heading to or from northern Honduras. San Pedro Sula is the country’s commercial and industrial hub, serving as a strategic point for business travel and logistics. The city also acts as a launching pad for tourism to Honduras’ scenic Bay Islands, including Roatán and Utila, as well as to cultural and archaeological destinations like the ancient Maya ruins of Copán.

The new route not only supports JetBlue’s growth in the Northeast—where JFK remains one of its strongest focus cities—but also deepens the airline’s connectivity across the Americas. By the end of 2025, JetBlue plans to serve more than 40 international destinations, with a robust network that stretches from Canada and the U.S. to South America, the Caribbean, and even Europe.

A Broader Vision for International Connectivity

JetBlue’s latest route to San Pedro Sula is more than just a new city on its map—it represents a continuation of the airline’s commitment to increasing international connectivity with a strong focus on Latin American markets. The carrier has made substantial inroads in countries like the Dominican Republic, Colombia, and Ecuador in recent years, and now, Honduras joins that growing list.

As U.S. airlines increasingly seek to diversify their route portfolios and cater to shifting passenger demographics, destinations like San Pedro Sula—which combine business, family, and tourism demand—are emerging as key opportunities. JetBlue’s entry into this market not only meets current demand but also has the potential to stimulate new economic and cultural exchanges between the U.S. and Honduras.

JetBlue’s entry into San Pedro Sula is a reflection of its evolving strategy: growing not only through traditional business hubs but also by building stronger ties with Central American countries that have deep cultural and economic connections to communities in the United States. This route gives travelers in both countries new opportunities for exploration, reconnection, and growth.

As the carrier continues to expand its international reach, travelers can expect more additions like San Pedro Sula that align with JetBlue’s core promise: delivering low fares with exceptional onboard service, reliable schedules, and customer-focused innovations.
