Skydio, the prominent U.S. drone manufacturer and a global leader in autonomous flight technology, has reached the final phase of the U.S. Army’s Short Range Reconnaissance (SRR) Tranche 2 program. The company is set to deliver its cutting-edge Skydio X10D Small Unmanned Aircraft System (sUAS), representing the next evolution in autonomous drone technology.
Having secured the Short Range Reconnaissance program in November 2021., Skydio continues to be the primary solution provider for the U.S. Army. The deployment of the Skydio X2D has equipped U.S. soldiers with a high-performance, domestically manufactured sUAS, significantly enhancing situational awareness, safety, and security across diverse defense applications.
Mark Valentine, President of Global Government at Skydio, expressed pride in the company’s collaboration with the U.S. Army, stating, “As the largest manufacturer of small drones in the United States, we are proud to further our work with the U.S. Army. Many US government agencies and international allies have already ordered the X10D, and we look forward to delivering the X10D to our service members.”
Skydio recently introduced its latest enterprise drone, the Skydio X10, alongside the Skydio X10D, designed specifically for defense and government applications. The Skydio X10 platform boasts state-of-the-art data capture cameras, unparalleled autonomy, and versatile hardware, catering to various industries such as defense, public safety, and utilities.
The Skydio X10D drone, engineered to exceed SRR specifications for tactical performance, offers tactical advantages day or night by combining exceptional maneuverability with best-in-class sensors. Notably, it is the first sUAS to facilitate worry-free 24/7 operations, featuring the revolutionary NightSense for autonomous, obstacle-avoidance flight in zero-light environments. The integration of a FLIR Boson+ sensor further enhances thermal imaging quality, providing more accurate radiometric readings day or night.
Highlighting the importance of technology integration for SRR objectives, the Skydio X10D ensures enhanced compliance with federal standards, including the Robotics and Autonomous Systems – Air (RAS-A) Interoperability Profile. Its open, modular platform supports third-party applications, enabling the use of third-party and government-owned flight application software. The drone’s modular ports facilitate quick attachment swaps in the field for maximum versatility.
The SRR program aims to equip soldiers with rapidly deployable small UAS solutions for reconnaissance and surveillance (R&S) activities. The Army is executing multiple tranches to advance sUAS technology and overall performance continually.
Beyond the SRR program, Skydio proudly supports all branches of the U.S. military with sUAS systems. Collaborating closely with the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU), Skydio has streamlined the acquisition process of autonomous drones for the Department of Defense (DoD). The company has also established a National Defense Authorization Act-compliant supply chain to ensure trustworthy sourcing for production at scale. Notably, Skydio recently hosted Deputy Defense Secretary Kathleen Hicks and DIU Director Doug Beck, showcasing its manufacturing facility and demonstrating the DIU’s Artificial Intelligence for Small Unit Maneuver (AISUM) system, which enables a single operator to manage a diverse group of drones autonomously.
