Matson Elevates Three Leaders in Strategic Executive Realignment to Support Operational Growth
Matson, Inc., a leading U.S. shipping and logistics company serving the Pacific region, has announced a strategic reshuffling of its leadership team, with the promotion of three executives into key roles that will shape the company’s future operational strategy and regional performance. The changes are part of Matson’s continuing efforts to strengthen its leadership ranks as it expands operations and enhances service quality across its network.
Vic Angoco Named Executive Vice President, Operations
At the forefront of these changes is Vic Angoco, formerly Senior Vice President of Alaska operations, who has been promoted to the position of Executive Vice President, Operations. Angoco will now be based out of Matson’s newly established corporate headquarters in Walnut Creek, California, and will assume overarching responsibility for Matson’s entire network of operational activities, encompassing:
- West Coast terminal operations
- Vessel operations and marine engineering
- Equipment operations and maintenance
- Corporate facilities management
This role places Angoco among the company’s most senior leadership, reflecting the trust and confidence placed in his long history of results-driven performance and regional expertise.
A 35-Year Maritime Career Rooted in the Pacific
Angoco’s career in the maritime industry spans over three decades and began in his native Guam, giving him deep familiarity with Matson’s core Pacific markets. Since joining the company in 1996 as Sales and Customer Service Manager for Guam, he has steadily progressed through a broad spectrum of management roles. These include leadership positions in:
- Sales and operations across Guam, Hawaii, and San Francisco
- Regional management of customer service and logistics functions
- Oversight of Matson’s Pacific Division, where he was promoted to Senior Vice President in 2010, overseeing operations in Hawaii, Guam, Micronesia, and the South Pacific
Most recently, Angoco has been leading Matson’s Alaska operations since 2022, steering the company through a period of modernization and operational integration in the 49th state.
“Vic is one of Matson’s most experienced and trusted leaders,” said Matt Cox, Chairman and CEO of Matson. “His deep knowledge of both the maritime industry and our company’s operations makes him an ideal fit for this new enterprise-wide role. He adds further strength and depth to the executive team guiding our terminal and vessel operations.”
Leadership Promotions in Alaska Reflect Next Generation of Company Stewards
Alongside Angoco’s promotion, Matson announced two key advancements within its Alaska division, reflecting both continuity and strategic succession planning.
Jennifer Tungul Promoted to Senior Vice President, Alaska
Jennifer Tungul, who has served as Vice President, Alaska Operations, will succeed Angoco as Senior Vice President, Alaska, and now holds executive responsibility for all of Matson’s business activities in the state. This includes oversight of terminal operations, regional logistics services, and customer relations across key ports including Anchorage, Dutch Harbor, and Kodiak.
Tungul brings over two decades of experience with Matson to her new role, having joined the company’s Alaska operations in 2002. Over the years, she has steadily taken on increasing responsibility, including:
- Financial and operations roles at multiple Alaska locations
- Appointment as Terminal Manager for Dutch Harbor
- Promotion to General Manager, Dutch Harbor in 2019
- Advancement to Director, Alaska Operations later that same year
- Elevated to Vice President, Alaska Operations in 2022
Tungul’s leadership has been instrumental in optimizing Matson’s Alaska terminal operations, strengthening regulatory compliance, and advancing the company’s commitment to environmental and operational excellence.
“Jenn is a standout example of the talent we’ve cultivated from within Matson,” said Cox. “She combines deep operational knowledge with the leadership ability to drive innovation and performance across our Alaska operations. Her promotion reflects not only her past accomplishments but also her future potential.”
Rob Olson Appointed Vice President, Alaska Operations
To fill the role vacated by Tungul, Rob Olson, formerly General Manager of Alaska Terminal Operations and Safety, Quality, Environment and Security (SQES), has been promoted to Vice President, Alaska Operations. Olson will now assume direct management of Matson’s terminal operations across the company’s critical Alaska ports—Anchorage, Kodiak, and Dutch Harbor—as well as continued oversight of key SQES initiatives.
Olson joined Matson in 2022 as General Manager for the Anchorage Terminal, where he was quickly recognized for his leadership, efficiency, and ability to integrate safety and operational excellence. Later that same year, his responsibilities were expanded to include the oversight of Safety, Quality, Environment, and Security for all of Matson’s Alaska terminal facilities.
Before joining Matson, Olson brought valuable logistics experience from the private sector, having served as Transportation and Maintenance Manager for a major U.S. retail grocery chain. His career foundation includes eight years of service in the U.S. Marine Corps, where he developed key operational and leadership skills that continue to shape his management style today.
“Rob has quickly established himself as a reliable and forward-thinking leader,” said Cox. “His dedication to operational safety and customer service has helped raise performance across our Alaska network. His new role is a natural next step, and we’re confident in his ability to deliver results in the years ahead.”
A Strategic Moment for Matson’s Future
These executive promotions come at a pivotal time for Matson. The company is not only navigating a complex global shipping environment but is also investing in digitalization, sustainable operations, and regional infrastructure upgrades to ensure long-term resilience and competitiveness.
- Alaska remains a strategically important market for Matson, both in terms of maritime shipping and as a logistical bridge to Pacific operations.
- The relocation of Matson’s corporate offices to Walnut Creek, CA, reflects its strategic alignment with operational hubs and talent pools on the West Coast.
- Strengthening the leadership bench ensures that Matson can respond proactively to evolving customer needs, regulatory expectations, and market dynamics.
By advancing leaders like Angoco, Tungul, and Olson—each with deep institutional knowledge and proven operational success—Matson reinforces its commitment to developing internal talent and sustaining performance across its U.S. and Pacific shipping networks.
Continuity, Excellence, and Growth
The leadership transitions announced this week reflect more than individual achievement—they signal Matson’s broader strategy of aligning executive talent with core business priorities. These appointments ensure operational continuity, deepen the company’s leadership bench, and align with Matson’s long-standing values of customer focus, safety, integrity, and environmental stewardship.
As Vic Angoco steps into a role that will influence the entire operational network, and as Jennifer Tungul and Rob Olson assume leadership of Alaska operations, Matson is poised to enter a new era of capability and responsiveness in maritime logistics.
