AUMOVIO Introduces Advanced Trailer Assist Systems to Improve Safety and Maneuverability

AUMOVIO Unveils Next-Generation Trailer Assistance Systems to Transform Safety and Maneuverability for Vehicle-Trailer Combinations

Towing a trailer—whether for work, recreation, or logistics—has long been one of the most demanding tasks for drivers. From reversing into tight spaces to navigating complex turns or avoiding obstacles, even experienced drivers can find vehicle-trailer combinations difficult to control. Addressing these challenges head-on, AUMOVIO has introduced two groundbreaking advanced driver assistance functions designed to significantly improve safety, precision, and ease of use when driving, maneuvering, and parking with trailers of all kinds.

The newly developed solutions—Trailer Backtrack and Trailer Collision Warning—represent a major leap forward in trailer-specific assistance technology. Together, they aim to remove much of the stress and uncertainty associated with towing by automating complex maneuvers and providing real-time warnings to help prevent costly and potentially dangerous collisions. Both systems will make their public debut at CES 2026 in Las Vegas, with market availability expected in 2027.

Rising Demand for Trailer Assistance Technology

The demand for advanced trailering solutions has grown steadily in recent years, particularly in North America, where towing is deeply embedded in everyday life. Large pickup trucks, SUVs, and commercial vehicles are frequently used to haul cargo trailers, recreational vehicles, boats, horse trailers, and equipment. While these vehicles offer impressive towing capacity, handling a trailer in confined environments—such as parking lots, marinas, loading docks, or residential driveways—remains a significant challenge.

Difficult lighting conditions, poor weather, limited visibility, and tight angles further complicate matters. Misjudging the turning radius of a trailer or failing to detect obstacles can easily result in collisions, damage to both vehicle and trailer, or even injury to pedestrians nearby. AUMOVIO’s expanding trailering portfolio directly addresses these pain points by combining automation, intelligent sensing, and intuitive driver interaction.

Trailer Backtrack: Reversing Made Simple at the Push of a Button

One of the most frustrating situations for any trailer driver is reversing into a space at the wrong angle. Once the vehicle and trailer are misaligned, attempts to correct the mistake often make matters worse, pushing the trailer further off course and increasing stress for the driver.

To solve this problem, AUMOVIO has enhanced its existing Trailer Reverse Assist, first introduced in 2020 for both conventional and gooseneck or fifth-wheel trailers. While the earlier system already helped drivers intuitively steer while reversing using a control button and visual guidance on the display, the new Trailer Backtrack function takes assistance to an entirely new level.

With Trailer Backtrack, drivers can return the vehicle-trailer combination to its original starting position automatically. At the touch of a single button, the system retraces the exact path driven forward and maneuvers the vehicle and trailer back along that same trajectory. There is no need for manual steering, throttle control, or corrective adjustments. The assistant takes full control of the maneuver, ensuring the vehicle remains on the optimal line without deviation.

This capability is particularly valuable in narrow parking bays, awkward loading ramps, or confined urban spaces where repeated trial-and-error reversing attempts can quickly become frustrating and time-consuming. By restoring the starting position effortlessly, Trailer Backtrack allows drivers to reset and approach the maneuver again with confidence.

Trailer Collision Warning: Intelligent Protection in Critical Moments

While reversing challenges are well known, collisions during turning, cornering, or passing maneuvers pose an equally serious risk. Trailers have a significantly larger turning circle than the towing vehicle, and drivers frequently underestimate how much space is required—especially when reversing or navigating sharp corners.

AUMOVIO’s Trailer Collision Warning system directly addresses this issue by continuously monitoring the surroundings and the relative position of the vehicle and trailer. The system warns drivers of potential collisions not only with external obstacles such as pedestrians, bicycles, curbs, lampposts, or parked vehicles, but also with the trailer itself.

One of the most common—and costly—mistakes during tight maneuvers occurs when the rear corner of the towing vehicle collides with the front corner of the trailer due to excessive steering angle. Trailer Collision Warning actively calculates this risk in real time and alerts the driver before contact occurs, helping prevent damage to both vehicle and trailer.

The system operates during reversing, starting off, passing, and cornering maneuvers, making it a comprehensive safety solution for a wide range of real-world driving scenarios.

Leveraging Existing Vehicle Technologies for Smart Integration

A key strength of AUMOVIO’s approach lies in its intelligent use of existing vehicle technologies. The Trailer Collision Warning system integrates seamlessly with surround-view camera systems already present in many modern vehicles and, where available, supplements them with radar sensors.

By combining data from these sensors, the system builds an accurate real-time model of the vehicle’s surroundings. Pedestrians, cyclists, obstacles, and infrastructure elements are detected and tracked, while a dynamic path overlay on the vehicle display shows whether the current steering angle could lead to a collision. This visual feedback allows drivers to understand risks instantly and adjust their actions accordingly.

Rather than overwhelming drivers with alerts, the system is designed to enhance situational awareness and support informed decision-making—especially in high-stress environments where split-second judgments matter.

A Comprehensive Trailer Assistant Portfolio

The introduction of Trailer Backtrack and Trailer Collision Warning further strengthens AUMOVIO’s position as a leader in trailer assistance technology. These new features join an already extensive trailer assistant family that is unmatched in scope.

AUMOVIO’s portfolio includes systems that assist with:

  • Coupling the vehicle to the trailer
  • Automated reversing for different trailer types
  • Support during overtaking maneuvers
  • Automatic assistance for launching boats with trailers

One of the company’s most recognized innovations, the “Transparent Trailer” function, earned AUMOVIO an Innovation Award at CES 2021. This solution enables drivers to virtually “see through” the trailer using live surround-view imagery displayed on the vehicle’s screen, dramatically improving visibility of areas behind and beside the trailer while driving.

Together, these systems form a comprehensive ecosystem that transforms towing from a stressful task into a confident, controlled experience.

AUMOVIO’s Vision for the Future of Mobility

Since its spin-off in September 2025, AUMOVIO has continued the automotive technology legacy of the former Continental group sector Automotive as an independent company. Headquartered in Frankfurt, Germany, AUMOVIO operates as a global technology and electronics provider dedicated to making mobility safer, more connected, more exciting, and increasingly autonomous.

The company’s broad portfolio spans sensor solutions, displays, braking systems, comfort technologies, and advanced driver assistance systems, underpinned by deep expertise in software, architecture platforms, and software-defined vehicle technologies. In fiscal year 2024, the business areas now under AUMOVIO generated €19.6 billion in sales, underscoring the company’s scale and global relevance.

With over 86,000 employees across more than 100 locations worldwide, AUMOVIO is well positioned to bring its trailer assistance innovations to markets around the globe.

Making Trailer Maneuvering Effortless for Everyone

“Maneuvering with a trailer is one of the biggest challenges for drivers,” said Ibro Muharemovic, Head of the Autonomous Mobility business area in North America at AUMOVIO. “Anyone who has to reverse with a trailer will appreciate an intelligent assistance system. With our two new functions, we now offer support that makes handling a trailer effortless for everyone.”

As vehicle-trailer combinations become increasingly common across personal, commercial, and recreational use, AUMOVIO’s latest innovations mark a significant step toward safer, simpler, and more intuitive towing. By combining automation, real-time intelligence, and user-focused design, the company is redefining what drivers can expect from modern trailering technology—and setting a new benchmark for the industry.
