Airspan Networks, a leading innovator in software and hardware solutions for 5G networks and a pioneer in Open RAN technology, has been chosen by AWTG Limited (AWTG) as the RAN partner for the groundbreaking England’s Connected Heartland Railways (ECH-R) project. This initiative, part of the UK government’s 5G Innovation Regions program, aims to transform connectivity across rural and transport sectors, leveraging advanced 5G technology to deliver seamless broadband coverage for passengers and operational teams.
The ECH-R project represents a major step forward in enhancing rail and rural connectivity. Airspan’s AirSpeed™ 1900 Outdoor Small Cells will be deployed along key sections of the railway to provide reliable, high-performance 5G standalone (SA) connectivity. This advanced infrastructure will power several critical applications, including:
1. Passenger Broadband: Offering uninterrupted, high-speed internet access directly to passengers’ devices or via onboard Wi-Fi, enhancing travel experiences.
2. Operational Efficiency: Enabling real-time communication, onboard diagnostics, and system monitoring for railway operational teams, improving safety and efficiency.
3. Trackside Connectivity: Extending high-speed connectivity to trackside communities, providing Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) to rural areas, local businesses, and agricultural operations along the route.
“Partnering with AWTG on this transformative project underscores Airspan’s dedication to delivering cutting-edge, scalable connectivity solutions,” said Henrik Smith-Petersen, Chief Sales and Marketing Officer at Airspan Networks. “Our technology ensures robust 5G coverage in even the most challenging environments, unlocking new opportunities for rail transport and rural connectivity.”
The ECH-R initiative is a cornerstone of the wider vision for England’s Connected Heartland, showcasing how commercially sustainable 5G private networks can revolutionize both rail operations and rural communications. The success of this deployment will set the stage for further 5G network expansions across the UK’s transport infrastructure, highlighting the immense value of cost-effective, high-performance 5G solutions in addressing unique connectivity challenges.
David Mintah, Mobile Private Networks Director, emphasized the importance of collaboration in achieving this vision: “5G technology has the potential to redefine connectivity across the UK. Projects like ECH-R demonstrate what’s possible when innovative providers like Airspan work together to deliver seamless, future-ready rail solutions.”
Supporting Broader UK Connectivity: Borderlands 5G Innovation Region
Beyond the ECH-R project, Airspan is also contributing to the Borderlands 5G Innovation Region (Borderlands 5GIR) project, a program designed to enhance connectivity in rural and semi-urban areas. Key locations include the Windermere Ferry and Kielder Forest, where Airspan’s Small Cells will form part of a diverse Open RAN ecosystem. This initiative underscores Airspan’s versatility in delivering both integrated and interoperable 5G solutions, reinforcing its role as a key enabler of advanced wireless connectivity across the UK.
Together, the ECH-R and Borderlands 5GIR projects showcase the transformative potential of 5G technology in bridging connectivity gaps, driving economic growth, and improving quality of life for rural and transport communities. Airspan Networks continues to play a pivotal role in bringing this vision to life through innovative, scalable, and future-proof solutions.
