American Airlines Expands Winter Sun Routes with New Flights to Mexico and the Caribbean
American Airlines is embracing the spirit of “Christmas in July” with a major expansion of its winter schedule, unveiling new routes and increased service to sun-drenched destinations across Mexico, the Caribbean, and Latin America. With three brand-new international routes and added frequencies on several existing ones, American is giving travelers more ways than ever to escape the winter chill.
This winter, American will begin new service from Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) to Mexico City (MEX) and Queretaro (QRO), as well as from Philadelphia (PHL) to Santo Domingo (SDQ) in the Dominican Republic. In addition, the airline will ramp up flights to popular tropical spots including Dominica, St. Maarten, Tortola in the British Virgin Islands, and more.
“As the leading U.S. airline in Mexico, the Caribbean and Latin America, American is committed to growing our network and expanding access to top leisure destinations,” said José A. Freig, Vice President of International and Inflight Dining Operations at American. “These new routes and expanded frequencies reflect our continued investment in the region. This winter, we’ll be operating 10% more seats than last year, reinforcing our dedication to giving customers more ways to travel south.”
Expanding a Leading Network
With over 430 peak daily departures to 97 destinations in the region, American will offer more than 2.3 million roundtrip seats between the U.S. and Latin America this December — nearly one million more than its closest competitor. This robust winter schedule positions American as the top U.S. airline in the region.
“Summer is in full swing, but savvy travelers are already planning their winter escapes,” said Philippe Puech, American’s Director of International Network Planning. “Our expanded schedule ensures that customers have more convenient and exciting options to trade snow for sunshine.”
Tickets for the new and expanded flights will go on sale starting July 14 at aa.com and through American’s mobile app.
New Options from Chicago
American is significantly expanding its international footprint from Chicago with two new routes launching this winter:
- Chicago (ORD) to Mexico City (MEX): Daily service begins October 26. Travelers can explore the bustling capital, rich in culture, history, and gastronomy.
- Chicago (ORD) to Queretaro (QRO): Seasonal daily service will run from December 18 to January 5, timed perfectly for the holidays. Queretaro offers a historic city center and is a gateway to nearby attractions like San Miguel de Allende and one of Mexico’s top wine regions.
These additions come on top of American’s earlier international expansion from Chicago, which added five new destinations and boosted flights to Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central America. Altogether, American will now serve over 20 destinations from ORD catering to sunseekers.
More Choices from Philadelphia
Philadelphia will also see increased connectivity this winter, with American adding one new route and increasing service on several others. From December 18 through January 5, the airline will offer over 20 peak-day departures to 14 destinations across Mexico, the Caribbean, and Latin America.
- Philadelphia (PHL) to Santo Domingo (SDQ): New daily service begins December 18, offering travelers easy access to sandy beaches and rich cultural experiences in the Dominican Republic.
Expanded service from PHL includes:
- Aruba (AUA): Increasing to two daily flights
- San Juan, Puerto Rico (SJU): Growing to three daily flights
- St. Maarten (SXM): Expanding from weekly to daily service
American already serves more destinations from PHL than any other airline, and these enhancements further solidify its leadership.
Miami: A Growing Gateway to the Tropics
Miami International Airport (MIA), American’s major hub for Latin America and the Caribbean, will see record activity this winter with 415 peak daily departures. From December 18 to January 5, American will expand service on eight popular holiday routes.
In total, American will offer more than 170 daily departures from MIA to 73 destinations across the region, giving travelers unparalleled access to warm-weather getaways.
Expanded routes from Miami include:
- Dominica (DOM): Increasing to two daily flights
- Kingston, Jamaica (KIN): Up to four daily flights
- Marsh Harbour, Bahamas (MHH): Boosting to three daily flights
- North Eleuthera, Bahamas (ELH): Expanding to three daily flights
- Ocho Rios, Jamaica (OCJ): Doubling to two daily flights
