American Airlines has announced a $150,000 grant to Florida Memorial University (FMU) to support the Wayman Aviation Academy, an initiative focused on creating pathways into aviation careers for underrepresented students and fostering high-caliber talent in the field. This contribution supports American’s mission to broaden awareness and increase access to aviation opportunities.
“We are excited to partner with Florida Memorial University to support the Wayman Aviation Academy,” said Christina Flores, American’s Managing Director of Global Talent Acquisition. “This grant, along with our ongoing involvement, reaffirms our commitment to developing a future aviation workforce that reflects our diverse customers and communities.”
This partnership aligns with important objectives for both American Airlines and FMU, which include:
- Supporting the Wayman Aviation Academy: The $150,000 grant will fund new initiatives, state-of-the-art equipment, and additional training opportunities, ensuring that students receive top-tier education and resources.
- Enhanced Access to Top Talent: FMU will provide American increased access to its aviation programs and affiliate institutions, establishing a valuable channel for sourcing skilled aviation talent.
- Building Brand Preference: American aims to position itself as a top employer among FMU students and graduates by offering career development resources and access to industry professionals.
- Future Career Opportunities: This partnership will create a pipeline for interns and entry-level aviation professionals, especially focusing on roles for pilots and managers.
“Florida Memorial University is dedicated to equipping our aviation students with the comprehensive skills needed to excel in the industry,” said Interim FMU President William McCormick. “American Airlines’ generosity will significantly aid FMU’s efforts to provide our students with essential skills and create meaningful career opportunities.”
This collaboration builds upon American’s ongoing support of FMU students. American’s campus team and Miami International Airport (MIA) Flight Chief office have established strong ties with FMU, offering mentorship, campus visits, and base tours to enrich students’ educational experiences.
