Avolon Completes Delivery of Royal Jordanian’s First Airbus A320neo

Avolon, a leading global aviation finance and leasing company, has officially delivered the first Airbus A320neo aircraft to Royal Jordanian Airlines, marking a significant advancement in the Jordanian national carrier’s fleet renewal and expansion program. The delivery represents the beginning of a broader agreement that will see Avolon provide Royal Jordanian with a total of eight A320neo family aircraft over the next 12 months.

The handover ceremony took place at the Airbus Delivery Centre in Toulouse, France, and was attended by representatives from Avolon, Royal Jordanian, and Airbus, highlighting the importance of this strategic milestone for all parties involved. This delivery is particularly notable as it introduces the A320neo—a more fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly aircraft type—into Royal Jordanian’s fleet for the very first time.

A320neo to Drive Operational Efficiency and Route Expansion

Royal Jordanian’s first A320neo is configured with 180 seats in an all-economy layout, optimized for high-density regional and medium-haul routes. This configuration reflects the airline’s focus on enhancing operational efficiency while maintaining passenger comfort and supporting increased connectivity across the Middle East, Africa, and Europe. Future A320neo family deliveries to Royal Jordanian will include a mix of configurations, ranging from full-economy layouts to premium cabin designs. Some of the upcoming A321neo aircraft will feature lie-flat business class seats, tailored for longer-haul services and high-yield markets.

The introduction of the A320neo into Royal Jordanian’s fleet aligns with the airline’s broader strategic vision of modernizing its operations and strengthening its competitive position in the region. With 20% lower fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions than previous-generation narrowbody aircraft, as well as a 50% reduction in noise footprint, the A320neo offers both environmental and economic advantages. These improvements will play a critical role in helping Royal Jordanian meet its sustainability goals while also enhancing its cost structure.

Supporting Royal Jordanian’s Growth and Sustainability Objectives

Royal Jordanian currently operates a fleet of 24 aircraft serving 50 destinations worldwide, with a stated ambition to grow its fleet to 41 aircraft by 2028. The delivery of the A320neo marks a pivotal moment in achieving that target. The airline is actively working to expand its presence in both established and emerging markets, with a particular emphasis on strengthening its network in the Levant, the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, North Africa, and select European capitals.

According to the airline’s leadership, the A320neo is expected to become a cornerstone of Royal Jordanian’s short- and medium-haul operations, offering the flexibility to open new routes, increase frequencies on high-demand services, and improve schedule reliability. The enhanced performance characteristics of the A320neo also support the airline’s goals of reducing its carbon footprint and aligning with international emissions reduction standards, including IATA’s Fly Net Zero initiative, which targets net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

Avolon’s Strategic Role as a Long-Term Partner

Avolon’s collaboration with Royal Jordanian is not new. The Irish-headquartered lessor already has two Boeing 787-8 Dreamliners on lease to the airline. With this latest A320neo delivery, Avolon is further deepening its relationship with Royal Jordanian and reaffirming its role as a strategic partner in the carrier’s growth journey.

As of March 31, 2025, Avolon’s fleet included 140 A320neo family aircraft, with an additional 294 on order—underscoring the lessor’s strong commitment to next-generation aircraft. This robust order book positions Avolon to offer flexible and timely delivery solutions to airlines seeking to modernize their fleets amid a broader industry shift toward more efficient and sustainable aircraft.

Paul Geaney, President and Chief Commercial Officer of Avolon, expressed his enthusiasm about the partnership, stating:

“We are pleased to strengthen our partnership with Royal Jordanian with this first A320neo delivery. We are proud to play a central role in the airline’s fleet expansion plans, leveraging our large orderbook to support Royal Jordanian’s future growth. As passenger traffic in the region continues to grow, we look forward to future opportunities to work together.”

Royal Jordanian’s Vision for the Future

For Royal Jordanian, the delivery of its first A320neo is more than just the acquisition of a new aircraft—it symbolizes a renewed commitment to operational excellence, customer experience, and sustainability. The airline has been implementing a comprehensive transformation plan aimed at revitalizing its brand, improving service offerings, and strengthening its financial performance.

Samer Majali, Vice Chairman and CEO of Royal Jordanian, emphasized the importance of this milestone in the airline’s development:

“The delivery of our first A320neo marks a significant milestone in our fleet modernization strategy. This aircraft, with its advanced technology and enhanced fuel efficiency, will enable us to offer improved services to our passengers while reducing our environmental footprint. Configured with all economy seats, this aircraft will serve a number of popular tourist routes, supporting our goal to promote Jordan as a destination of choice. It also reinforces our role as the preferred carrier connecting the Levant with key cities across the Middle East and Europe, as we continue to position Amman as the region’s leading transit hub.”

Royal Jordanian is also working to enhance its customer service experience across all touchpoints, including onboard service, digital booking tools, and loyalty programs. The integration of new-generation aircraft such as the A320neo is expected to contribute significantly to these efforts, offering passengers a quieter, more comfortable, and more environmentally responsible travel experience.

Continued Growth in Regional and International Markets

As global air travel continues to recover and expand, especially in emerging markets across the Middle East and North Africa, Royal Jordanian is positioning itself to capitalize on increasing demand for air connectivity. The carrier’s strategic location in Amman enables it to function as a critical transit hub for passengers traveling between Europe, the Gulf, North Africa, and the Indian subcontinent.

With support from trusted partners like Avolon and Airbus, Royal Jordanian is poised to accelerate its fleet renewal plans and leverage modern aircraft to unlock new growth opportunities. The addition of the A320neo family is expected to enhance the airline’s competitiveness, improve cost efficiency, and enable more sustainable operations—key imperatives for success in a rapidly evolving aviation landscape.

As the delivery of the remaining A320neo aircraft progresses over the coming year, industry observers will be watching closely to see how Royal Jordanian leverages its new fleet to expand routes, improve service levels, and strengthen its position as a premium regional carrier.
