In a remarkable achievement, BNSF Railway’s Los Angeles Hobart Intermodal Facility, renowned for managing the world’s largest volume of domestic intermodal freight, has set a new standard for on-time departures. The facility achieved an impressive 94% on-time departure rate in 2023, surpassing the previous high of 86% recorded in 2012. This remarkable accomplishment underscores BNSF’s commitment to operational excellence and customer satisfaction.
Notably, these outstanding results were attained concurrently with the facility completing its safest year on record for accidents and injuries. The unwavering focus on safety measures and protocols has led to a significant reduction in incidents, showcasing BNSF’s dedication to creating a secure working environment.
The Los Angeles Hobart Intermodal Facility’s success in both on-time performance and safety not only reflects the dedication of the BNSF team but also highlights the significance of efficient freight handling and transport in the region. As a key player in the transportation industry, BNSF continues to set new benchmarks, demonstrating the company’s ability to adapt, innovate, and prioritize safety without compromising operational efficiency.
The recent milestones achieved by BNSF Railway in Southern California are a testament to the exceptional execution of our dedicated local team, a steadfast commitment to continuous improvement, and significant ongoing investments in the region,” affirmed Richard Dennison, BNSF California Division General Manager.
As part of our commitment to enhancing operational capabilities, BNSF has expanded the capacity at the Hobart Intermodal Facility by 500 spaces and incorporated cutting-edge crane stacking technology. In parallel, a multi-year project is underway at the San Bernardino intermodal facility in the Inland Empire, aiming to boost efficiency. To ensure readiness and responsiveness, BNSF has strategically positioned a fleet of 100 locomotives across the West Coast and other key network locations, ready to address any potential service disruptions.
In 2023, a noteworthy accomplishment was the completion of a project adding approximately 45 miles of triple track between Barstow and Needles, CA, further enhancing rail infrastructure efficiency. The ongoing development of the Barstow International Gateway, a master-planned rail facility with an investment exceeding $1.5 billion, is set to revolutionize supply chain dynamics. Upon completion, this facility will not only reduce supply chain costs but also decrease carbon emissions, minimize port dwell times, and provide a more cost-effective rail option compared to current truck transportation to existing facilities.
Embracing technological advancements, BNSF is actively investing in cleaner technologies like electric hostlers. Furthermore, the implementation of tools such as Load Plan Optimizer and Automated Yard Checks underscores our commitment to improving operational efficiency.
Richard Dennison emphasized, “BNSF remains resolutely focused on adapting to the evolving supply chain landscape through our innovative service offerings and continuous capital investments. This ensures our readiness to accommodate the burgeoning growth in Southern California and across our expansive network.
