Braskem Commissions Brave Future Vessel to Advance Global Logistics and Sustainability Goals
Braskem, a global leader in biopolymer production and a key player in the petrochemical sector, has taken a major step forward in its logistics strategy with the christening and commissioning of its newest vessel, the Brave Future. The ship, an advanced ethane carrier, marks a critical expansion in Braskem’s maritime capabilities and underpins its long-term strategy to reduce dependency on third-party logistics, control transportation costs, and enhance global competitiveness.
The Brave Future, which represents an investment of approximately R$500 million, was officially christened at a ceremony held at the YAMIC shipyard in China, the facility responsible for its construction. This sophisticated vessel will operate along a critical shipping route linking the United States, Mexico, and Brazil—regions central to Braskem’s global supply chain and business operations.
Advanced Capabilities and Environmental Efficiency
The new vessel is equipped with cutting-edge technology, reflecting Braskem’s commitment to sustainability and operational excellence. With a total length of 188 meters and a cargo capacity of 36,000 cubic meters, the Brave Future is designed to transport liquefied ethane at cryogenic temperatures as low as -104°C. This capability enables Braskem to move large volumes of feedstock essential for its petrochemical operations with increased efficiency and flexibility.
One of the vessel’s most notable features is its dual-fuel propulsion system, which can operate on both traditional bunker fuel and ethane. This flexibility not only ensures consistent fuel availability but also significantly reduces the ship’s environmental impact. Compared to the global average fleet, the Brave Future produces up to 40% less carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions, thanks to its optimized engine efficiency and clean fuel use. This aligns with Braskem’s broader sustainability agenda, which includes ambitious carbon reduction targets across its operations and supply chain.
Strategic Importance to Global Operations
According to Hardi Schuck, Director of Braskem Trading & Shipping (BT&S), the commissioning of the Brave Future is a milestone that solidifies Braskem’s strategic autonomy in maritime logistics. “The Brave Future is a strategic asset that expands our autonomy in the area of logistics, provides greater predictability to operations, and strengthens our position as a global leader in the petrochemical industry,” said Schuck.
The ship underwent a rigorous series of sea trials before entering into commercial operation. These trials tested the vessel’s performance under real-world conditions, including assessments of its safety systems, navigational capabilities, propulsion efficiency, and overall seaworthiness. Successfully passing these tests ensures that the vessel is ready for long-haul, high-demand international routes.
Fleet Expansion to Support Growth
The Brave Future is not Braskem’s first proprietary vessel. It joins the Brilliant Future, an earlier addition to the company’s ethane carrier fleet. Together, these ships mark the foundation of Braskem’s growing in-house maritime logistics capabilities. The company plans to expand this fleet further, with four additional vessels expected to be delivered by 2026.
This expanding fleet reflects Braskem’s commitment to long-term investments in infrastructure that can support more reliable and cost-effective logistics. With global supply chains facing increased pressure from geopolitical uncertainty, fuel price volatility, and shipping disruptions, Braskem’s proactive approach helps the company remain resilient and responsive in a fast-changing global market.
