China Eastern Airlines has significantly enhanced its integrated air–rail intermodal transportation service by embedding high-speed rail options directly into its flight booking ecosystem. The upgrade allows passengers to purchase a single combined ticket that covers both air and rail segments, streamlining long-distance travel across China and beyond. At the core of the upgraded service is an artificial intelligence (AI)-driven booking system jointly developed by China Eastern Airlines and China State Railway Group Co., Ltd. The collaboration represents a major step forward in China’s broader push toward integrated multimodal transportation, where aviation and rail systems operate as interconnected components of a unified travel platform rather than separate and fragmented networks.
The AI-powered system is embedded across CEAir’s digital channels, including its official mobile application, WeChat mini-program, and website, ensuring wide accessibility for domestic and international travelers. When a passenger searches for a flight, the system automatically evaluates whether the requested origin and destination can be efficiently connected through a combination of air and high-speed rail services. If such connectivity exists, the platform dynamically generates optimized travel itineraries without requiring additional input from the user.
This automation removes one of the key friction points in traditional travel planning—manually coordinating between flight schedules and rail timetables. Instead, the system intelligently analyzes real-time availability across both transport modes and presents bundled options that include total journey time, pricing, and applicable discounts. By integrating these components into a single interface, CEAir effectively transforms a previously fragmented booking process into a unified digital experience.
A key feature of the upgraded platform is its ability to treat rail segments as equivalent components to flight legs within the booking engine. This structural change allows the system to match high-speed rail schedules with CEAir flight departures and arrivals in a coordinated manner. In addition, the system calculates and enforces reasonable transfer windows between rail and air segments. The service is particularly focused on supporting passengers transferring through Shanghai’s airports, especially Shanghai Pudong International Airport for long-haul international routes.
While the current rollout is geographically concentrated, China Eastern Airlines has indicated plans for future expansion. The long-term objective is to extend coverage to additional provinces and transportation corridors, further integrating the national high-speed rail network with the airline’s domestic and international route structure. These service points allow passengers to complete key airport procedures such as check-in and baggage drop before arriving at the airport, significantly reducing congestion and wait times at terminal facilities.
By shifting certain airport processes upstream to railway stations, CEAir is effectively decentralizing the air travel experience. This approach helps distribute passenger flow more evenly across the transport network while enhancing convenience for travelers making multi-modal journeys.
