Clean Energy (NASDAQ: CLNE), the leading provider of the cleanest fuel for the transportation sector in the U.S., has secured a contract to design and build a cutting-edge hydrogen fueling station for Riverside Transit Agency (RTA) in California. The contract was awarded following a competitive process and includes hydrogen supply and ongoing maintenance services for the purpose-built, private-access station in Riverside. RTA intends to launch the station with five fuel cell buses, with plans to expand its hydrogen-powered fleet to over 100 buses over the next ten years. This new facility is central to RTA’s commitment to transitioning to a zero-emission vehicle fleet.
RTA serves one of the largest geographic regions in the U.S. and operates some of the longest passenger routes, making hydrogen a natural choice as a clean fuel alternative to power the agency’s high-mileage transit buses, alongside battery-electric buses.
Chad Lindholm, senior vice president of Clean Energy, said, “Securing another hydrogen station project is a testament to Clean Energy’s leadership and expertise in the hydrogen fueling sector. Partnering with Riverside Transit on this innovative project is a great opportunity as they expand and diversify into clean, low-emission technologies. Hydrogen is a reliable solution for long routes, and this new station will support RTA’s efforts to provide clean service for years to come.”
Jeremy Smith, Board Chair of Riverside Transit Agency, commented, “This project underscores our dedication to advancing clean energy solutions and is a significant step in our transition to a zero-emission vehicle fleet. We are committed to driving innovation and providing environmentally responsible solutions for our communities.”
The announcement of the new hydrogen station follows RTA’s recent acquisition of five 40-foot hydrogen fuel cell electric buses, made possible by a $5.1 million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation. This is part of RTA’s phased plan, starting in 2026, to transition its entire bus fleet to zero-emission vehicles.
This project marks Clean Energy’s second hydrogen station contract, following the successful completion of a similar facility for Foothill Transit Agency in Pomona, CA, in June 2023.
