Data from June 1 to September 1, 2024, reveals notable shifts in luggage-related issues compared to previous years. This summer, developed countries, particularly airlines like Lufthansa and airports such as New York, have emerged as significant sources of passenger problems. In contrast to last year’s focus on emerging countries, the Sostravel.com network reports more critical disruptions in developed regions.
Edoardo Zarghetta from Sostravel.com notes, “While emerging countries were the primary concern for luggage issues last year, this summer has seen a shift. Developed countries, particularly Lufthansa and New York, have been central to the major disruptions reported by passengers.”
The data shows an overall increase in baggage issues. Specifically, damaged luggage has risen by 12% to 62% compared to summer 2023. Conversely, instances of lost luggage have decreased to 13%, as well as delayed deliveries (22%) and delayed deliveries with damage (4%).
Notably, New York’s airport faced significant disruptions on July 18 and 19 due to a Microsoft security update that led to delays and cancellations of hundreds of flights, affecting IT systems.
Lufthansa’s performance issues are largely attributed to passengers on connecting flights, which often involve multiple stopovers. According to Sostravel.com, all reported cases for Lufthansa involved at least one stopover, with 16% of passengers experiencing two stopovers and 21% three.
To mitigate these issues, Sostravel.com advises passengers to pack essential items in their carry-on luggage and consider using the Lost Luggage Concierge service, which helps locate and return missing baggage.
Sostravel.com, listed in Milan (SOS) and New York (SOSAF), provides digital travel solutions including the Lost Luggage Concierge and Dr. Travel, a telemedicine service for travelers, supporting over one million users globally.
