Dangerous Goods Survey Reveals Supply Chain Innovations and Challenges

Labelmaster, in collaboration with the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and Hazardous Cargo Bulletin, has released the 2024 results of the ninth annual Global Dangerous Goods Confidence Outlook.

“The good news is that the DG industry is poised for innovation. The survey results show organizations are increasingly investing in digitalization and sustainability initiatives within their DG operations,” said Robert Finn, Vice President at Labelmaster. “However, these efforts often face significant hurdles that professionals in the field must overcome.”

Survey Highlights

The survey reveals both progress and obstacles in the dangerous goods (DG) and hazardous materials (hazmat) sector:

  • Digitalization Efforts: 83% of organizations are pursuing digitalization in their DG operations, including e-documentation (52%), virtual training (51%), paperless regulations (49%), and digital validation/acceptance (36%). Despite these efforts, 80% of respondents face challenges, primarily due to financial investment (86%), supply chain partner support (86%), carrier/modal variations (86%), and technology access (84%).
  • Sustainability Initiatives: 81% of companies have implemented sustainability practices such as sustainable packaging (48%), partnering with environmentally responsible suppliers (48%), and using digital rather than printed publications (46%). However, adoption is slowed by the current business environment (56%), lack of data (39%), and change management issues (30%).
  • Managing New and Declared Goods: 80% of DG professionals identified misdeclared or undeclared goods as problematic. Additionally, two-thirds of respondents find it challenging to define, accept, and manage new products entering the supply chain.

Future Outlook

Looking ahead, DG professionals are excited about several innovations over the next five years:

  • Improved data connectivity (74%)
  • Smarter warehouse tools for streamlined acceptance and shipping (59%)
  • Quicker access to digital regulatory information and product data (56%)
  • Sustainable packaging options (47%)

Recommendations for Advancing DG Operations

To foster more digitized, sustainable, and compliant DG operations, consider these strategies:

  1. Digitalization: Integrate DG software like Labelmaster’s DGIS with ERP and WMS systems for accurate data management. Utilize tools such as DG AutoCheck via API Connect.
  2. Sustainability: Adopt reusable and recyclable packaging, and shift to digital publications and licenses.
  3. Reduce Misdeclared/Undeclared Goods: Implement repeatable processes with DG software and provide ongoing training through eLearning platforms.

Nick Careen, IATA’s Senior Vice President of Operations, Safety, and Security, emphasized, “Embracing digitalization, sustainability, and precise data management will lead to a more efficient, transparent, and compliant DG industry. Advanced DG software solutions like DG AutoCheck can ensure accurate data and streamlined operations, while sustainable practices support our commitment to innovation and environmental responsibility.”
