
Dorian LPG Ltd. Expands Fleet with Delivery of Advanced Dual-Fuel VLGC “Areion”
Dorian LPG Ltd., a globally recognized owner and operator of very large gas carriers (VLGCs), has announced the successful delivery of its latest state-of-the-art vessel, the 93,000 cubic meter dual-fuel newbuilding Areion. The vessel, designed to transport both liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and ammonia, marks another important milestone in the company’s ongoing strategy to modernize its fleet while advancing sustainability and operational efficiency.
The Areion was constructed by Hanwha Ocean Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. at its Okpo Shipyard in South Korea, a facility known for producing some of the most technologically advanced vessels in the world. Upon delivery, the vessel immediately joins Dorian LPG’s fleet and is set to begin commercial operations under the Helios LPG Pool, a joint venture between Dorian LPG and MOL Energia Pte Ltd.. The pool operates out of Copenhagen and Singapore, positioning the vessel strategically within major global LPG trading hubs.
A Name Rooted in Mythology and Symbolism
The vessel’s name, Areion, carries symbolic weight derived from Greek mythology. Areion was a legendary black-maned horse known for extraordinary speed, intelligence, and supernatural abilities. By naming the vessel after such a powerful figure, Dorian LPG reflects the ship’s advanced capabilities, efficiency, and its role in driving forward the company’s next generation of maritime operations.
Strengthening a Modern, Low-Emission Fleet
The delivery of Areion represents the second fully owned dual-fuel LPG carrier in Dorian LPG’s fleet. When combined with four additional dual-fuel vessels currently chartered in, more than 20% of the company’s fleet now consists of ships capable of operating on alternative, lower-emission fuels.

Complementing the dual-fuel engine is a hybrid exhaust gas cleaning system, commonly referred to as a scrubber. This system is designed to operate in both open-loop and closed-loop modes, allowing the vessel to comply with stringent emission regulations in ports and Emission Control Areas (ECAs). In closed-loop mode, the scrubber minimizes discharge, making it suitable for environmentally sensitive regions where strict controls on effluent are enforced.
Compared to widely used very low sulphur fuel oil (VLSFO), the scrubber system on Areion is engineered to achieve even lower emissions of sulphur oxides, black carbon, and particulate matter. This positions the vessel as a leader in environmentally responsible shipping practices.

It enables peak shaving—reducing the need for excess power generation during high-demand periods—and helps prevent blackouts by ensuring stable power supply. Strategic Financing Structure
Alongside the vessel’s delivery, Dorian LPG finalized a comprehensive financing arrangement to support the acquisition. The company secured $62.9 million in funding through a combination of commercial lending and export credit support.
The financing package includes participation from Citibank N.A. (Hong Kong branch) and Nordea Abp (New York branch). A significant portion of the loan is backed by export credit insurance provided by the Korea Trade Insurance Corporation, commonly known as K-Sure.
The structure consists of two tranches:
- A $20.7 million commercial tranche underwritten solely by Nordea, with a seven-year tenor and an interest margin of 1.80% over SOFR.
- A $42.2 million tranche provided by Citibank, supported by K-Sure guarantees, with a 12-year tenor and a lower margin of 1.00% over SOFR.
This blended financing approach allows Dorian LPG to optimize borrowing costs while maintaining financial flexibility. The agreement also includes customary covenants and security arrangements typical for maritime financing transactions.
