DP World Callao Leading Growth and Sustainability in 2024

DP World, a global leader in logistics and supply chain solutions, marked a transformative year in 2024 with its operations at the South Pier of the Port of Callao. With a commitment to innovation and infrastructure development, the company invested over $1 billion to enhance the efficiency and capacity of Peru’s primary container terminal. These strategic investments have strengthened Peru’s position in international trade and significantly boosted agro-exports, reinforcing DP World’s role in driving economic progress.

Expansion of the South Pier

One of the most significant milestones in 2024 was the expansion of the South Pier. In June, DP World Callao unveiled an extended pier that increased its length to 1,050 meters. This expansion allows the terminal to accommodate three large vessels simultaneously, a critical enhancement in meeting growing trade demands. Alongside the expansion, the addition of three state-of-the-art gantry cranes and 12 all-electric yard cranes has significantly boosted efficiency, making the facility one of the most technologically advanced in the region.

With these advancements, the terminal saw an 80% increase in its capacity, handling an impressive 1.96 million containers in 2024. This marked a 19% growth compared to the previous year, positioning DP World Callao as a key logistics hub for global trade. The enhanced infrastructure not only streamlined operations but also improved turnaround times for shipping lines, enhancing Peru’s competitive edge in international markets.

Operational Excellence and Notable Ship Arrivals

Throughout 2024, DP World Callao continued to enhance its operational efficiency. The terminal successfully serviced 901 vessels, reflecting its ability to handle high shipping volumes with ease. One of the most remarkable highlights of the year was the arrival of the APL Fullerton in September. This vessel, with a capacity exceeding 17,200 TEUs, became the largest ship ever to dock at a Peruvian port.

The smooth handling of such a massive vessel underscored the terminal’s capability to accommodate mega-ships, which are becoming increasingly prevalent in global shipping. This milestone strengthened Peru’s integration into international trade networks, ensuring that the country remains a vital link in global supply chains.

Commitment to Sustainability

DP World Callao has placed a strong emphasis on environmental responsibility, aligning its operations with global sustainability goals. In April, the company inaugurated Latin America’s first electric charging station within a port terminal. This charging station powers a fleet of 20 fully electric internal transport trucks, the largest of its kind in the region. This initiative marked a significant step toward reducing the terminal’s carbon footprint, contributing to DP World’s global mission of reducing Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 42% by 2030. Callao is well on track to achieve a 90% reduction in emissions by the same year, reinforcing its leadership in sustainable logistics operations.

Additionally, the adoption of electric cranes and energy-efficient port equipment has further advanced DP World’s commitment to decarbonization. By investing in renewable energy sources and eco-friendly logistics solutions, the company is setting new industry standards for sustainable port management.

Peru Brand Certification and Agro-Export Contributions

In recognition of its pivotal role in Peru’s economic development, DP World Callao became the first port terminal in the country to receive the prestigious Peru Brand certification. This distinction acknowledges the terminal’s 18 years of contributions to national exports and trade expansion.

DP World Callao plays an essential role in facilitating Peru’s agro-exports, handling nearly 40% of the country’s agricultural shipments. Notably, the terminal is responsible for processing 85% of Peru’s blueberry exports, a key industry driving economic growth. By providing world-class logistics solutions, DP World Callao has supported local farmers and exporters, ensuring the efficient movement of goods to international markets.

Social Impact and Community Engagement

Beyond its economic contributions, DP World Callao remains dedicated to supporting local communities through various social and educational initiatives. The company has actively invested in programs aimed at improving education and social infrastructure in Callao.

A standout initiative in 2024 was the 12th edition of the DP World Race, held in November. This annual charity sports event raised funds to improve school facilities and support educational programs in Callao. Over the years, this initiative has positively impacted six schools, benefiting nearly 3,000 students in the region. The event serves as a testament to DP World’s commitment to fostering social progress and empowering future generations.

Reflecting on the year’s achievements, Carlos Merino, CEO of DP World Ecuador, Peru, and Colombia, stated: “The expansion of the South Pier and our sustainability achievements mark a new era for DP World Callao. These milestones not only reinforce our position as Peru’s leading container terminal but also demonstrate our commitment to connecting Peru to the world through innovation and operational excellence.”

As DP World Callao looks to the future, the company remains steadfast in its mission to drive international trade, foster sustainability, and create long-term value for the communities it serves. Continued investments in logistics infrastructure and technological advancements will further enhance the terminal’s capabilities, ensuring that it remains a cornerstone of Peru’s economic development.

With a clear vision for growth and innovation, DP World Callao is well-positioned to shape the future of global trade while maintaining its leadership in sustainable and efficient port operations.
