Eaton, a global leader in intelligent energy management, will showcase a range of cutting-edge solutions for hydrogen-powered commercial vehicles at the IAA Transportation 2024 event in Hanover, Germany, from September 17 to 22.
“Hydrogen has the potential to significantly reduce carbon emissions in commercial vehicles,” said Scott Adams, Senior Vice President of Global Products at Eaton’s Mobility Group. “Whether powered by hydrogen fuel cells or hydrogen combustion engines, our innovative solutions position Eaton as a key supplier and partner in the transition to cleaner transportation.”
Enhancing Fuel Cell Efficiency with Eaton’s TVS Technology
One of Eaton’s key innovations is its hydrogen recirculation blower, built on its TVS technology, which enhances the efficiency of hydrogen fuel cells by recirculating excess hydrogen through the fuel cell stack. This system improves hydrogen utilization, prolongs system life, and addresses cold start issues by managing anode purging and water buildup.
For hydrogen combustion engines, which require more air for the combustion process, Eaton’s TVS supercharger delivers immediate airflow at low engine speeds. It can also be decoupled to minimize energy loss when not needed and used alongside turbochargers for enhanced performance in super-turbo applications.
Addressing Challenges in Hydrogen Combustion Engines
Hydrogen combustion engines present unique challenges, particularly in air management. These engines operate at higher combustion chamber temperatures than diesel engines, making them more prone to surface ignition or knocking. Eaton, leveraging its expertise as one of the largest engine valve manufacturers, has developed next-generation hollow valves specifically for hydrogen applications. These valves help reduce engine temperatures, lower the risk of knocking, and allow for more cost-effective manufacturing materials.
Robust Engine Braking for Hydrogen Engines
Hydrogen combustion engines also require stronger engine braking due to their lower compression ratios. Eaton’s 1.5-stroke engine brake provides up to 40% more braking power at lower speeds compared to traditional brakes. When combined with Eaton’s supercharger, this system delivers up to 20% more braking efficiency, addressing the specific needs of hydrogen-powered vehicles.
