FedEx Freight earned multiple top awards at TMCSuperTech, highlighting the skills of its professional technicians
FedEx Freight Senior Technician Wes Salley of Austin, Texas, was named Grand Champion and led FedEx Freight to a sweep of awards at the Technology & Maintenance Council’s National Technician Skills Competition, TMCSuperTech. The competition was held in conjunction with TMC’s Fall Meeting in Pittsburgh, Sept. 20-24. Salley also earned SuperTech’s Champion of States Award, presented to the technician with the highest score among competitors who earned championships at state trucking association skills competitions. Salley earned first place at the Texas Trucking Association’s Technician of the Year competition in May.
In addition to Salley’s Grand Champion title, FedEx Freight Senior Technicians Kelby Bentley of Greensboro, North Carolina, and Mitch Buelow of Fremont, Indiana, finished second and third, respectively. Salley and Buelow also combined to win SuperTech’s Team Award which recognizes the highest combined score of two pre-selected team members representing the same company.
The first day of the two-day competition featured a series of tabletop and hands-on challenges designed to replicate the issues fleet maintenance technicians encounter in their shops. On the second day, competitors completed a written exam covering Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) knowledge. FedEx Freight led all companies with six SuperTech station wins:
- Electronic Engine Diagnostics: Matt Sloan (Jacksonville, Florida)
- Fasteners: Wes Salley
- Fifth Wheel: Eric Vos (Boise, Idaho)
- Tire & Wheel: Jamie Smith (Cincinnati, Ohio)
- Trailer Lighting: Kelby Bentley
- Wheel End: Eric Vos
In the FutureTech competition, which is designed to evaluate and inspire the next generation of fleet maintenance technicians, two first-year FedEx Freight technicians captured station awards. Jake Faulkner, of York, Pennsylvania, won the Roll-up Doors and Trailer Lighting stations, while Nicholas (Clay) Clay of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, earned first place in the Trailer PMI station.
