Hyzon Motors Inc., a global leader in hydrogen fuel cell technology and supplier of zero-emission heavy-duty fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs), recently marked a significant milestone by delivering four FCEVs to Performance Food Group (PFGC). The joint ceremony, held at PFG’s Vistar facility in Fontana, California, featured ride-along demonstrations of the new vehicles and was attended by local government leaders, company executives, and PFG associates.
Parker Meeks, CEO of Hyzon, emphasized the importance of this collaboration in achieving common decarbonization goals. Meeks highlighted the positive impact of Hyzon’s fuel cell technology on Vistar’s heavy-duty trucking operations, enabling emission-free and reduced noise pollution transportation. The partnership aims to contribute to the shared objective of reducing carbon emissions from heavy-duty trucking.
Meeks also acknowledged the deployment of these zero-emission trucks as a significant step toward achieving sustainability goals. He expressed gratitude for the partnership with PFG and emphasized the role of real-world operations in providing valuable insights to optimize Hyzon’s technology. Additionally, Meeks hinted at the development of the next-generation 200kW fuel cell system through this collaboration.
Hyzon’s hydrogen FCEVs boast an expected travel range of up to 350 miles and a refueling time of fifteen minutes, offering efficiency and convenience. PFG plans to integrate these vehicles into its fleet for delivering snacks, candy, and beverages. The hydrogen fuel for these vehicles will be provided by Pilot Travel Centers LLC, a leading fuel and energy provider with an extensive network of travel centers across North America.
This delivery follows the announcement of the fuel cell electric vehicle agreement between Hyzon and PFG six months ago, making Hyzon one of the pioneers in delivering heavy-duty fuel cell electric trucks in the U.S.
Jeff Williamson, Senior Vice President of Operations at PFG, highlighted the importance of sustainability in the food distribution sector. Williamson expressed PFG’s commitment to reducing environmental impact and responsible service to Southern California. He commended partners like Hyzon for contributing to these goals.
Hydrogen fuel cell vehicles offer advantages over traditional diesel trucks, presenting similar benefits and convenience without harmful emissions. FCEVs, compared to battery electric vehicles (BEVs), are lighter, have a longer range, and offer faster refueling times. These factors make FCEVs a practical choice for distribution and heavy-duty freight companies.
Vistar’s office in Fontana, Southern California, serves a significant population and numerous businesses. PFG has been actively transitioning away from diesel to reduce harmful emissions, showcasing its commitment to sustainability. Last August, a successful demo of Hyzon’s Liquid Hydrogen FCEV in Temple, TX, demonstrated its ability to deliver commercial loads over a continuous 16-hour route, covering more than 540 miles, even in extreme temperatures.
With the recent vehicle delivery and a successful trial of Hyzon’s next-generation 200kW FCEV, Hyzon and PFG are poised to collaborate further on an agreement for 15 200kW FCEVs, with an option for an additional 30 FCEVs, solidifying their commitment to a sustainable future.
