As the shipping industry continues to confront persistent challenges such as workforce shortages, aging talent pools, and gender imbalance, this collaborative program stands out as a strategic and socially impactful solution. With women currently accounting for less than 2% of the global seafaring workforce, both companies see this initiative not only as a commitment to gender equity but also as a means to strengthen operational excellence by diversifying talent pipelines.

At the heart of this initiative is a shared vision between International Seaways and V. to create meaningful, long-term change in the representation of women at sea. The inaugural intake of female cadets is scheduled to begin in September 2025. These cadets will be placed aboard two training vessels that have been specially selected and adapted to support their integration into the seafaring workforce. Key enhancements onboard include the addition of gender-specific facilities, the provision of workwear and personal protective equipment (PPE) designed for women, and tailored health and wellness support programs.

One of the program’s most defining features is the active involvement of experienced female senior officers from the International Seaways fleet, who will mentor and guide the cadets throughout their initial rotation. This peer support structure aims to build confidence and ensure cadets have a strong network of allies during the critical early stages of their maritime careers.

Creating a More Supportive Onboard Environment

In addition to physical accommodations, International Seaways and V. are introducing a series of soft initiatives focused on improving the onboard culture. An onboard culture training module will be implemented across the participating vessels, emphasizing respect, safety, and inclusivity.
