Iteris Selected to Deploy Advanced Traffic Management System for City of Burleson
Iteris, Inc., a trusted global leader in smart mobility infrastructure management and a proud member of the Almaviva Group, has announced a major milestone in its ongoing mission to improve roadway efficiency and safety across the United States. The company has been awarded a $1.7 million contract by the City of Burleson, Texas, to implement a comprehensive Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS) plan. This initiative is part of Burleson’s broader commitment to upgrading its transportation infrastructure to meet the needs of its growing population and enhance the everyday experience for commuters and pedestrians alike.
Under the terms of this one-year agreement, Iteris has already completed the design and construction of a brand-new Traffic Management Center (TMC) in Burleson. The company is now actively engaged in the installation and integration of advanced traffic signal detection hardware, cutting-edge software platforms, and robust communication infrastructure at key intersections and corridors throughout the city.
Bringing Smart Mobility to Life in Burleson
Burleson, a fast-growing suburb located just south of Fort Worth in North Central Texas, is home to more than 50,000 residents. Like many municipalities experiencing rapid population growth, the city faces increasing traffic congestion, safety concerns at busy intersections, and the need for more efficient signal timing. Recognizing these challenges, city officials selected Iteris to lead a comprehensive traffic modernization initiative aimed at improving mobility, enhancing situational awareness, and enabling real-time traffic management capabilities.
A cornerstone of the project is the deployment of Iteris’ Vantage Apex® hybrid detection sensors—a next-generation solution that combines high-definition video technology with 4D radar sensing and integrated artificial intelligence (AI). This marks a significant leap forward in detection and monitoring capabilities, offering superior accuracy in identifying, tracking, and classifying vehicles, bicycles, and pedestrians in real time.
Vantage Apex is widely considered a transformative sensor platform for smart intersections. It is the first in the industry to offer 1080p high-definition video alongside 4D radar in a single unit. This powerful combination provides traffic engineers and city managers with unparalleled visibility into intersection activity, allowing for smarter signal timing decisions and quicker response to incidents or congestion. The embedded AI algorithms enhance detection precision, particularly in low-light or adverse weather conditions—an essential feature in regions that experience variable driving environments.
Complete Integration of Hardware, Software, and Communications

The contract with Burleson is not limited to sensor upgrades. Iteris is delivering a comprehensive ATMS deployment, encompassing a full suite of technologies and services that collectively create a connected, intelligent traffic ecosystem. Along with Vantage Apex sensors, Iteris teams are installing closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras for live monitoring, ethernet switches to facilitate data transfer, cell modems for remote connectivity, and all supporting communication infrastructure required to link intersections to the new TMC.
This fully integrated network will allow Burleson traffic engineers to monitor real-time traffic flow from a centralized location, analyze data trends, detect anomalies, and respond to incidents as they occur. The ATMS solution is designed to be scalable and future-ready, enabling the city to expand capabilities as new mobility challenges and technologies emerge.
Building a Turnkey Traffic Management Center
A central component of Iteris’ work in Burleson is the design, construction, and integration of a turnkey Traffic Management Center. The new TMC serves as the operational nerve center of the city’s traffic network. From this facility, transportation personnel can access a live feed from all connected intersections, adjust signal timing dynamically, analyze historical performance data, and deploy adaptive traffic control strategies during peak travel periods or special events.
The TMC has been custom-built to meet the specific needs of Burleson, with an emphasis on usability, scalability, and long-term sustainability. Its design supports both current operational requirements and future technology upgrades, making it a foundational asset in the city’s long-term smart mobility roadmap.
Steven Bradley, Senior Vice President of Mobility Consulting Solutions at Iteris, emphasized the significance of this collaborative effort.
“We’re excited to leverage Iteris’ core services and offerings to help Burleson on this project from inception to completion,” Bradley said. “Their plan brings together our comprehensive and streamlined approach to furnish the advanced sensor technology, upgraded traffic management system, and complete installation/integration—all things that we’re proud to have dedicated teams for. This turnkey approach delivers on Iteris’ vision to help agencies accelerate the deployment of new technologies to improve mobility.”
Bradley went on to note that Iteris’ multidisciplinary teams—spanning engineering, integration, and data science—are uniquely positioned to help cities like Burleson not only install modern traffic systems, but also make full use of them through training, support, and ongoing optimization.
“We’re thrilled to bring those teams together to help the city execute their vision to increase efficiency and safety for the traveling public,” he added.
A Model for the Future of Smart City Infrastructure
The Burleson project serves as a model for other municipalities seeking to modernize their traffic systems in an efficient, scalable, and cost-effective way. By partnering with a single provider that offers a fully integrated solution—from planning and design through to installation, software deployment, and operations—cities can minimize project risk, reduce procurement complexity, and accelerate the timeline to value realization.
Iteris’ ATMS deployments are not only about managing traffic—they’re also about transforming the way cities think about mobility. By combining state-of-the-art detection hardware with advanced software analytics and cloud-based communication networks, Iteris empowers local governments to make data-driven decisions that improve traffic flow, reduce emissions, enhance public safety, and deliver measurable results for residents.
