JAL to Showcase a Sustainable Future of Aviation in Harmony with Nature at GREEN× EXPO 2027

JAL Advances Sustainable Aviation Vision Through GREEN×EXPO 2027 Partnership

Japan Airlines (JAL) is strengthening its commitment to sustainable aviation and environmental responsibility through its partnership with the International Horticultural Expo 2027, Yokohama, Japan, widely known as GREEN×EXPO 2027. As a Gold Partner, the JAL Group is sponsoring both the Momentum Building Project and the Venue Operation Project, supporting preparations for an international event focused on nature, sustainability, innovation and the future of society.

GREEN×EXPO 2027 will take place in Yokohama City, Kanagawa Prefecture, beginning on March 19, 2027. The event is expected to bring together visitors, organizations, businesses and communities around a shared vision of creating a sustainable society that exists in harmony with nature.

For JAL, participation in the expo represents more than conventional corporate sponsorship. The airline sees GREEN×EXPO 2027 as an opportunity to encourage practical environmental action, communicate the importance of sustainable aviation and create connections between people, communities and the natural environment.

Building a Brighter Future Through Small Actions

JAL has developed its participation around the concept of “Small Steps Toward a Brighter Future.” The idea reflects the company’s belief that meaningful environmental progress can begin with individual actions that gradually develop into broader social change.

The role of international horticultural expos has evolved significantly over the decades. Since the 1990 Osaka Flower Expo, these events have increasingly moved beyond the celebration of flowers and gardens to address wider issues involving nature, sustainability and global environmental challenges.

GREEN×EXPO 2027 reflects this evolution by focusing on the relationship between people and the natural environment and exploring ways societies can create healthier and more sustainable futures.

JAL believes that the aviation industry has an important role to play in this conversation.

Since its establishment, the JAL Group has worked to connect people, regions and countries through air transportation. Air travel enables tourism, business, cultural exchange and economic development, but aviation also has an environmental footprint.

Recognizing this responsibility, JAL is working to strengthen its environmental initiatives while continuing to provide connectivity for customers around the world.

Under the company’s “Soaring Together” slogan, introduced in March 2026, JAL has organized its environmental activities around a broader commitment to creating a better future.

The airline views GREEN×EXPO 2027 as an important opportunity to turn this philosophy into practical activities involving customers, employees, communities and future generations.

Two Main Goals for GREEN×EXPO 2027

JAL has identified two major objectives for its involvement in GREEN×EXPO 2027.

The first is to build momentum for the expo and promote coexistence with nature.

The second is to promote and contribute to environmental initiatives in Japan.

These goals are aligned with the company’s long-term JAL Vision 2035, which aims to create a sustainable well-being future in which meaningful connections spread throughout society.

Through its participation in the expo, JAL intends to work together with a wide range of stakeholders to encourage practical actions related to environmental sustainability.

The company believes that environmental progress requires participation from individuals, businesses, governments and communities rather than relying on one organization or industry alone.

Specially Painted Aircraft to Promote GREEN×EXPO 2027

One of the most visible elements of JAL’s GREEN×EXPO 2027 campaign will be a specially painted aircraft.

JAL plans to introduce the aircraft beginning in November 2026, several months before the opening of the international horticultural expo.

The aircraft will feature a colorful design representing the vitality and richness of Earth, incorporating flowers and greenery into its exterior appearance.

By bringing the GREEN×EXPO 2027 message into the skies, JAL aims to increase awareness of the event among travelers across Japan and internationally.

The specially painted aircraft will serve as a moving symbol of the relationship between aviation, people and nature.

Details regarding the aircraft’s launch date and operating schedule will be announced through JAL’s dedicated GREEN×EXPO 2027 website.

Bringing the Expo Experience Onboard

JAL will also introduce GREEN×EXPO 2027 to passengers through its onboard communication channels.

Information about the event, its attractions and its vision for a sustainable future will be presented through the airline’s SKYWARD inflight magazine, personal inflight entertainment screens and forward-facing cabin screens.

The initiative will allow passengers to learn about the expo during their journeys and potentially inspire them to visit Yokohama.

The onboard content is part of a broader effort to connect air travel with environmental awareness.

For JAL, the aircraft itself can serve as a platform for communicating sustainability initiatives and encouraging passengers to consider how individual actions can contribute to environmental progress.

Personal-screen advertising will be available on both domestic and international flights, while forward-screen content will apply to domestic services.

Dedicated GREEN×EXPO 2027 Website

To provide travelers with additional information, JAL has launched a dedicated GREEN×EXPO 2027 section within its official website.

The platform provides information about admission tickets, the attractions of Yokohama and other content designed to encourage customers to discover the event.

By integrating the expo into its digital ecosystem, JAL is making it easier for customers to learn about the event while planning their travel.

The dedicated platform will also serve as a source of information about JAL’s related environmental activities and campaigns.

Admission Tickets Through JAL Miles

JAL customers will also have an opportunity to obtain GREEN×EXPO 2027 admission tickets through the airline’s “Experience via Miles” service.

The program allows JAL members to exchange miles for selected experiences and special events.

GREEN×EXPO 2027 tickets will become available through the program beginning August 31, 2026.

The required number of miles will vary depending on when the exchange is made.

For exchanges completed through March 18, 2027, one ticket will require 2,500 miles.

From March 19, 2027 onward, the requirement will increase to 3,000 miles per ticket.

The initiative provides JAL customers with another way to participate in the international horticultural expo while using their accumulated loyalty rewards.

Supporting Venue Operations Through Hospitality Training

JAL’s contribution will extend beyond promotion.

As part of its sponsorship of the Venue Operation Project, the airline will provide specialized training to staff and volunteers working at GREEN×EXPO 2027.

The training will include Customer Hospitality Training and Accessibility Training, drawing on the knowledge and experience of JAL cabin crew and other specialists.

Hospitality is an important component of the visitor experience at an international event, particularly one expected to attract guests from different countries, cultures and backgrounds.

JAL’s experience serving passengers from around the world provides valuable expertise in areas such as communication, customer care and accessibility.

The training will help venue personnel develop skills for welcoming visitors and creating an environment where people can participate comfortably.

JAL instructors will work together with venue staff to help ensure that visitors, including international guests, can enjoy GREEN×EXPO 2027 with confidence.

The hospitality training will be provided through JAL Business Career Support, while the accessibility component will contribute to creating a more inclusive visitor experience.

Advancing Sustainable Aviation Fuel Awareness

One of the most significant environmental initiatives connected with JAL’s GREEN×EXPO 2027 activities will focus on Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).

SAF is widely regarded as an important component of aviation’s transition toward lower-carbon operations because it can be produced from various sustainable feedstocks and used in existing aircraft engines when blended according to applicable requirements.

JAL has already been working to increase awareness and participation around domestically produced SAF.

In 2024, the company launched the “Let’s Fly with Used Cooking Oil®” project, which encourages the collection of used household cooking oil for use as a raw material in SAF production.

The initiative connects everyday household behavior with the future of aviation.

Instead of viewing sustainability as something limited to airlines or large industrial organizations, the project demonstrates how ordinary household materials can potentially contribute to aviation’s environmental transition.

Expanding Used Cooking Oil Collection

The used cooking oil initiative has continued to expand since its launch.

According to JAL, collection points have grown nationwide, with participation from 111 local governments and 235 stores.

This network demonstrates the potential for community-based initiatives to support larger environmental objectives.

During GREEN×EXPO 2027, JAL plans to build on the initiative through a participatory campaign called “Small Drops Toward a Brighter Future.”

Under the campaign, participants who bring household used cooking oil to designated collection locations will have opportunities to receive benefits such as JAL miles or entries into prize drawings.

The initiative is intended to make sustainability more tangible and accessible.

By encouraging people to participate directly, JAL hopes to demonstrate that environmental action does not necessarily require major lifestyle changes.

Small contributions, when made collectively, can become part of a much larger effort.

Inspiring the Next Generation

JAL’s GREEN×EXPO 2027 activities will also focus on children and young people.

The company recognizes that today’s younger generations will inherit the environmental challenges and opportunities shaped by current decisions.

As a result, JAL plans to provide opportunities for children to think about the future of aviation and the environment.

The company’s activities will include support for the elementary school idea contest “Mirai Action STATIONS.”

The contest encourages students to develop ideas for future actions, with a particular focus on SAF and the future of aviation.

Through this initiative, students can explore environmental issues from their own perspectives and consider how technology, communities and individual actions could contribute to a more sustainable future.

JAL also plans to conduct visiting classes at participating elementary schools.

These educational programs are designed to provide children with direct opportunities to discuss environmental challenges and explore potential solutions.

Creating Environmental Awareness Through Education

Education is an important component of JAL’s sustainability strategy because environmental transformation requires long-term changes in awareness and behavior.

By engaging children at an early stage, the airline hopes to help create a generation that understands the connection between transportation, energy consumption, environmental protection and society.

The programs also provide a platform for students to think creatively about future aviation.

Instead of simply presenting environmental challenges, JAL aims to encourage children to imagine what the skies of the future could look like and what actions might be required to achieve that vision.

Connecting Aviation With Communities

JAL’s participation in GREEN×EXPO 2027 demonstrates how an airline can contribute to a sustainability initiative beyond its core transportation activities.

The company’s role includes aircraft promotion, passenger communications, customer experience training, environmental campaigns and educational initiatives.

Together, these activities create multiple opportunities for people to engage with the sustainability message.

The approach also reflects the importance of collaboration.

Environmental challenges cannot be addressed by airlines alone. Progress requires cooperation among transportation companies, governments, businesses, communities, educational institutions and individual citizens.

GREEN×EXPO 2027 provides JAL with a platform for developing those connections.

A Broader Vision for Sustainable Aviation

JAL’s participation comes at a time when aviation is undergoing significant transformation.

Airlines around the world are exploring a variety of approaches to reduce environmental impacts, including sustainable aviation fuel, more efficient aircraft, improved operations and technological innovation.

While no single measure can solve aviation’s environmental challenges, combining multiple initiatives can contribute to long-term progress.

JAL’s focus on SAF awareness, community participation and environmental education is therefore intended to complement the airline’s broader sustainability activities.

The company’s “Small Steps Toward a Brighter Future” concept reflects the idea that progress can emerge through numerous initiatives implemented over time.

Looking Toward GREEN×EXPO 2027

As the March 2027 opening of GREEN×EXPO 2027 approaches, JAL will continue preparing a series of activities connected with nature, the environment and the future of aviation.

Additional programs and campaign details are expected to be announced through the airline’s dedicated platform.

Through its Gold Partnership, JAL aims to contribute to the success of the international horticultural expo while encouraging broader discussion about sustainability and coexistence with nature.

The specially painted aircraft, onboard communications, mileage-based ticket program, hospitality training, SAF campaign and educational initiatives will provide different entry points for customers and communities to engage with the event.

Ultimately, JAL’s involvement reflects its ambition to connect aviation with a broader vision of social and environmental well-being.

By bringing together passengers, employees, communities and future generations, the airline hopes to demonstrate how small actions can contribute to meaningful long-term change.

GREEN×EXPO 2027 will provide an international platform for discussing the future relationship between people and nature. For JAL, it will also serve as an opportunity to demonstrate how the aviation industry can participate in building that future.

Through continued collaboration, innovation and environmental awareness, the JAL Group aims to support the creation of a sustainable society while continuing to connect people, regions and the world.

The airline’s journey toward a more sustainable future will therefore continue not through a single initiative, but through a collection of practical actions designed to encourage participation, strengthen awareness and inspire the next generation to imagine—and help create—a brighter future for aviation and the planet.
