Japan Airlines (JAL) and Lime, a leading micromobility provider, have announced a partnership to promote last-mile transportation options and expand Lime’s port network across Japanese cities. This collaboration aims to enhance urban mobility by providing communities with more convenient and sustainable travel choices, potentially increasing Lime’s visibility in Japan and benefiting users with its stand-up and seated electric scooters.
The initiative comes at a critical time as Japan faces urban traffic congestion and limited transportation alternatives for business travelers and tourists. Rural regions, which suffer from population decline and aging demographics, also stand to benefit from these new solutions. Shared, light-weight electric vehicles can alleviate car traffic, reduce public transportation overcrowding, improve air quality, and minimize the space required for private car storage.
In line with its JAL VISION 2030 strategy, Japan Airlines is moving beyond traditional air travel to explore Mobility as a Service (MaaS) opportunities, aiming to improve regional transportation and foster connections across Japan.
Lime introduced its services in Japan on August 19, 2024, with the goal of promoting electric micromobility as a viable, eco-friendly mode of public transportation. The partnership with JAL strengthens Lime’s capacity to provide sustainable travel options for local residents and tourists alike.
Key Aspects of the JAL and Lime Partnership
- Mileage Collaboration: In a first for Japan, Lime riders can earn JAL miles, receiving 1 mile for every 100 yen spent on Lime rentals.
- Port Network Expansion: JAL will assist Lime in expanding its port infrastructure in Tokyo and other cities, supporting Lime’s launch in Naha City, Okinawa, with 40 ports and 180 scooters, including seated models.
- Short-Term Rentals: Lime will work with local governments, companies, and tourism boards to offer short-term rental options, marking its first destination-focused business in Japan.
Promotions for JAL Mileage Members
JAL mileage members can now earn rewards when using Lime scooters, with promotional campaigns running through December 31, 2024:
- First-Time Use Campaign: New users who register their JAL membership on the Lime app will receive 100 bonus miles for their initial ride.
- Double Miles Campaign: Registered JAL members can earn double miles when using Lime services during the promotion period.
Expanding Lime’s Port Infrastructure with JAL’s Support
Lime relies on dedicated e-scooter ports for convenient pick-up and drop-off points. JAL will support Lime in establishing new ports in service areas, especially in tourist destinations. Starting November 7, 2024, Lime will roll out its services in Naha City, Okinawa Prefecture, with 40 ports and 180 scooters, including the unique seated model.
This groundbreaking partnership between JAL and Lime marks the first collaboration in Japan between an airline and an electric micromobility provider, presenting new, eco-friendly travel options for Japanese communities and advancing shared mobility across the country.
