Joby Launches Dubai Flights, Advances Air Taxi Commercialization

Joby Aviation, Inc. , a leading innovator in the electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) industry, has achieved a pivotal milestone in the evolution of urban mobility. The company recently announced the successful completion of a series of piloted, vertical-takeoff-and-landing wingborne flights of its electric air taxi in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. These first-of-their-kind demonstration flights represent a major step toward Joby’s commercial debut in the region, expected to begin passenger services as early as 2026.

The flights not only mark Joby’s entry into the Middle East market but also signal the launch of its first international commercial readiness campaign. These operations align with Joby’s broader three-pronged global commercialization strategy: (1) operating its own air taxi networks in select cities, (2) selling aircraft to third-party operators, and (3) building long-term regional partnerships to scale operations effectively.

A Global Revolution in Urban Air Mobility Begins in Dubai

The Dubai test flights were carried out in close coordination with several UAE government bodies, including the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), the Dubai Civil Aviation Authority (DCAA), and the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA). These flights mark a critical point in Joby’s global expansion and reinforce the UAE’s strategic commitment to becoming a pioneer in advanced air mobility (AAM).

JoeBen Bevirt, Founder and CEO of Joby Aviation, emphasized the broader significance of this milestone:

“The United Arab Emirates is a launchpad for a global revolution in how we move. In addition to building a performant aircraft, we’ve been maturing our passenger service program with scalable manufacturing and global operational readiness. Our piloted test flights and presence in Dubai represent a monumental step toward weaving clean, quiet air taxi services into the fabric of everyday life—both here and around the world.”

Bevirt added that this development showcases not only the technological readiness of Joby’s aircraft but also the strength of American innovation on the international stage.

UAE Leadership Endorses Future-Ready Mobility

The inaugural piloted flights were witnessed by His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors at Dubai’s RTA. Al Tayer praised the milestone as a testament to the UAE leadership’s forward-looking vision of sustainable, integrated transport solutions.

“The launch of the air taxi’s trial operations reflects the UAE leadership’s commitment to advancing future-ready and sustainable mobility. It represents a new chapter in public and shared transport options, showcasing Dubai’s ability to lead amid rapid global technological transformation,” said Al Tayer.

He also highlighted that the air taxi service will introduce a new premium mode of travel for residents and visitors alike, offering smooth, fast, and safe transport across key locations in the city. Al Tayer noted that the project would integrate seamlessly with Dubai’s public transportation ecosystem—including metro, buses, e-scooters, and bicycles—creating a truly multimodal, smart city experience.

Transforming Urban Travel with Speed, Silence, and Sustainability

Joby’s five-seat eVTOL aircraft—designed to carry a pilot and up to four passengers—is engineered for high performance, operating at speeds of up to 200 miles per hour (~320 km/h) with near-silent flight and zero operating emissions. Its mission is to redefine short-haul urban travel by offering a faster, cleaner, and more efficient alternative to traditional ground transportation.

In Dubai, Joby plans to launch initial commercial service routes connecting high-demand locations such as:

  • Dubai International Airport (DXB)
  • Palm Jumeirah
  • Dubai Marina
  • Downtown Dubai

One of the flagship use cases—traveling from DXB to Palm Jumeirah—will reduce a typical 45-minute car journey during peak hours to a 12-minute flight, drastically improving commuting time for both residents and international travelers.

Construction of vertiports at key strategic sites is already underway. These dedicated takeoff and landing hubs will serve as the backbone of Joby’s regional operations and are designed to integrate into Dubai’s smart infrastructure and mobility network.

Building Momentum Through Partnerships and Government Collaboration

The Dubai initiative builds on Joby’s exclusive agreement signed with the Roads and Transport Authority in 2024, granting Joby six years of exclusivity for air taxi services in the emirate. That agreement cemented Joby’s role as a cornerstone partner in Dubai’s advanced air mobility ecosystem and paved the way for the company’s deeper integration into local regulatory and planning frameworks.

The collaboration with the DCAA and GCAA has also allowed Joby to achieve flight readiness within local airspace in record time—an outcome that underscores both regulatory agility and trust in Joby’s safety and operational standards.

This partnership-oriented approach is central to Joby’s go-to-market strategy, which emphasizes close collaboration with local governments, aviation authorities, and mobility agencies to ensure rapid, scalable, and safe deployment of air taxi services.

Validating Performance in Real-World Environments

The success in Dubai builds on more than two years of rigorous flight testing, including extensive hot-weather trials at Edwards Air Force Base in California. These tests have validated the aircraft’s ability to perform in extreme heat and other challenging environmental conditions—crucial for operations in regions like the Middle East.

With more than 40,000 miles of cumulative flight testing, multi-aircraft operations, successful piloted transition flights, and a decade and a half of engineering refinement, Joby has consistently demonstrated its technical leadership in the eVTOL field.

The Dubai operations now serve as the company’s international proof-of-concept, demonstrating how its aircraft and operational protocols scale beyond U.S. borders.

A New Era of Urban Aviation

Joby’s progress in Dubai signals more than a technological feat—it points to a paradigm shift in how cities around the world will approach urban transportation in the coming decades. By pioneering piloted air taxi services in one of the most globally connected cities, Joby is building the blueprint for safe, scalable, and sustainable urban flight.

With the UAE’s robust support, Joby’s market readiness campaign in Dubai sets the stage for full-scale commercial passenger operations in 2026, targeting both local and international travelers seeking speed, efficiency, and low environmental impact.

As other cities and countries look to adopt advanced air mobility solutions, Joby’s work in Dubai provides a replicable model of public-private partnership, regulatory engagement, and technical validation that could soon be echoed in cities across the world.

From its California headquarters to the skies above Dubai, Joby Aviation is on a mission to reimagine what’s possible in everyday transportation—and with its first piloted air taxi flights in the UAE complete, the future of flight is officially underway.
