Joby Aviation, Inc. has taken a significant step forward in its mission to revolutionize urban air mobility by acquiring a facility at Dayton International Airport. The company, known for developing electric air taxis for commercial passenger service, is gearing up for its initial manufacturing operations in Dayton, Ohio, and has commenced the hiring process.
This newly acquired facility will undergo customization to facilitate the commencement of manufacturing operations later this year. It will play a pivotal role in producing aircraft parts to support Joby’s Pilot Production Line located in Marina, California.
Joby’s acquisition of this on-airport facility marks the beginning of a broader plan to establish manufacturing capabilities that can build up to 500 aircraft annually in Dayton. The company envisions designing and constructing a larger greenfield factory as part of this expansion.
Didier Papadopoulos, President of Aircraft OEM at Joby, expressed his satisfaction, stating, “We’re pleased to be able to acquire an underutilized facility at Dayton International Airport and repurpose it as a modern, high-tech manufacturing center to serve as our initial manufacturing footprint in the region. Later this year, we expect to begin subtractive manufacturing of titanium and aluminum aircraft parts as we continue to grow our workforce in Dayton.”
Papadopoulos also acknowledged the warm reception from the Dayton community and Ohio at large, emphasizing the company’s commitment to collaboration and growth in the Miami Valley region.
This strategic move follows Joby’s announcement in September 2023, selecting Dayton, Ohio, as the location for its scaled manufacturing facility. With the capacity to produce up to 500 electric vertical take-offs and landing (eVTOL) aircraft per year, Joby plans to invest up to $500 million and generate up to 2,000 high-quality, clean manufacturing jobs in the region.
Joby’s electric air taxi, designed to carry a pilot and four passengers at speeds of up to 200 mph, promises high-speed mobility with significantly reduced noise compared to helicopters and zero operating emissions. The company’s presence in Dayton signifies a significant stride toward building the future of flight in the birthplace of aviation.
