OOCL Launches Second 16,828 TEU Vessel: OOCL Iris

Orient Overseas Container Line Ltd. (OOCL) proudly introduced its latest addition to the fleet, the “OOCL Iris,” a state-of-the-art 16,828 TEU container vessel. This marks the second ship in a series of ten new 16,000 TEU vessels ordered by OOCL and the first to be delivered by Nantong COSCO KHI Ship Engineering Co., Ltd. (NACKS).

The name “Iris” carries dual significance. It refers not only to a flower but also to OOCL’s proprietary IT innovation, the Integrated Regional Information System (IRIS). Launched in 1999, this system revolutionized the company’s operations by consolidating business processes across all global offices. By integrating customer shipment and financial data into a unified platform, IRIS has been pivotal in driving efficiency and operational excellence. Continuous upgrades leveraging advanced technologies have ensured the system remains a cornerstone of OOCL’s ability to adapt to industry challenges.

Advanced Technology and Sustainability Features

The “OOCL Iris” showcases cutting-edge technological innovations aimed at enhancing operational efficiency and sustainability. It features an intelligent integrated platform for real-time data collection, storage, and transmission. Key systems include:

  • An advanced energy efficiency system that recommends speed optimization and trim adjustments.
  • Real-time monitoring of fuel consumption and power usage across the main engine, generator, and boiler, providing actionable insights to optimize operations.

The vessel has been recognized with three “Smart Ship” notations and the Enviro-friendly (ENVIRO) and Sustainable (SUSTAIN-1) notations from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), underscoring OOCL’s commitment to green shipping and innovation.

Ceremony and Vision for the Future

The naming ceremony for the “OOCL Iris” was officiated by Ms. Lily Wan, wife of Mr. Eric Wang, Board Director and Vice President of Midea Group, with numerous distinguished guests, partners, and customers in attendance.

Speaking at the event, Mr. Weidong Tao, CEO of OOCL, highlighted the vessel’s significance:

“This series of new vessels achieves world-class standards in intelligent and environmentally friendly design, enhancing OOCL’s operational efficiency and reducing carbon emissions to meet customer and societal expectations for green shipping. This not only optimizes OOCL’s fleet structure but also strengthens global trade sustainability.”

He reaffirmed OOCL’s commitment to fostering a customer-centric approach by developing an integrated logistics supply chain ecosystem. This aligns with the company’s dedication to providing high-quality services, advancing global trade, and promoting sustainable development.

The “OOCL Iris” is a testament to OOCL’s vision of combining innovation and environmental stewardship to navigate the future of maritime operations.
