Samsara Inc., a leader in Connected Operations™ Cloud, has initiated legal proceedings in federal court against Motive Technologies, Inc. The lawsuit, filed in Delaware, accuses Motive of ongoing intellectual property theft, patent infringement, false advertising, and other illicit activities.
The complaint alleges that Motive, formerly known as KeepTruckin, built its product line and business strategy by consistently stealing Samsara’s technologies and unlawfully accessing its platforms. Samsara contends that Motive illegally accessed its platform, replicated marketing materials, and made unfounded advertising claims.
Extensive Copying and Unlawful Practices
Samsara’s filing asserts that Motive infringed three patents safeguarding Samsara’s flagship IoT devices, data platform, and features. The complaint points to the personal involvement of Motive’s CEO, Shoaib Makani, and other senior-level employees in the illicit conduct. Activity records reveal over 20,600 surreptitious views of Samsara’s Dashboard by Motive employees from 2018 to 2022.
In addition to theft, Samsara accuses Motive of commissioning intentionally flawed benchmarking studies to falsely compare its products with Samsara’s. Motive has relied on these studies to make inaccurate claims about Samsara’s products.
Persistent Unlawful Conduct
Legal action was pursued after over a year of urging Motive’s leadership to halt their unlawful activities. Activity logs indicate that Motive’s Director of Product attempted to access Samsara’s platform even after claiming to have instructed employees to stop. Motive continued introducing products mimicking Samsara’s innovations as recently as November 2023.
Legal Demands
Samsara seeks judgment acknowledging Motive’s patent infringement, permanently restraining Motive’s illegal conduct, and requiring compensation for losses and damages under state and federal law. The legal action aims to put an end to Motive’s ongoing infringement of Samsara’s patents in fleet management, driver safety, and sustainability solutions.
