Schneider Introduces New Intermodal Service Connecting the Southeast U.S. and Mexico

Schneider is set to launch a new intermodal service offering continuous rail transport between points in Mexico, Texas, and the Southeastern United States, with the service starting in December.

This new route is the result of a strategic partnership between CSX Corp. and Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC), which was recently announced. As a key customer of both CSX and CPKC, Schneider National, a leader in multimodal transportation, intermodal, and logistics services, is leveraging this collaboration to offer shippers an alternative to traditional over-the-road transport in the Southeast U.S.

The new service will connect growing markets in Mexico and Texas with Florida and Georgia, offering a more efficient and seamless solution compared to truck transportation. Unlike traditional cross-border trucking, intermodal service with CPKC ensures a smoother border crossing, minimizing delays and reducing the risk of freight loss.

Jim Filter, Schneider’s Executive Vice President and Group President of Transportation and Logistics, emphasized the significance of the service. “This is a major step forward in our industry, combining the exceptional services of two top-tier railroads to transform the intermodal landscape. Our customers will benefit from enhanced efficiency and reliability in their supply chains.”

The new service is also expected to support businesses diversifying their transportation strategies, particularly those looking to bolster nearshoring initiatives.

CSX’s Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer, Kevin Boone, highlighted the advantages of the partnership: “By combining the strengths of our networks, we provide customers with unmatched efficiency, reliability, and security. This service further reinforces our commitment to delivering sustainable, innovative transportation solutions.”

CPKC’s Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer, John Brooks, added, “The new interchange with CSX opens up new competitive options for customers like Schneider, offering expanded access to rapidly growing markets. By improving efficiency and increasing capacity, we’re removing trucks from the road and enhancing supply chains.”

Service highlights include:

  • Industry-leading service: Both CSX and CPKC are known for providing solutions with truck-like transit times.
  • Enhanced security: CPKC’s cross-border rail shipments are secured by customs clearance in-transit, minimizing risks of theft.
  • Reliable transit: Enjoy consistent, truck-like transit between the Southeast and Mexico, with CPKC’s proprietary Laredo train bridge crossing unaffected by U.S.-Mexico border shutdowns.
  • Superior sustainability: Schneider’s intermodal service cuts CO2 emissions by 62% compared to traditional truckload transport.
  • Maximized payload: Schneider’s lightweight equipment and specialized permits increase payload and savings by 10% or more.
  • Industry expertise: With over 30 years of experience in Mexico, Schneider is a trusted cross-border logistics provider.

This new service is a significant milestone in Schneider’s sustainability efforts, aligning with its goal to double intermodal capacity, reduce carbon emissions, and advance environmentally-friendly logistics solutions.
