The Seamless Air Alliance (SAA), a pioneer in Inflight Connectivity (IFC) standards, unveiled plans to promote the integration of 3GPP-defined 5G Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN) in the aviation sector. This initiative aims to establish seamless connectivity between terrestrial and satellite networks for future advancements.
In the realm of mobile satellite services, historical reliance on proprietary technologies has impeded seamless integration with terrestrial networks. The diversity in modem, antenna, and frequency specifications among different satellite providers has presented challenges for airlines, hindering interoperability.
In response to these challenges, the Seamless Air Alliance (SAA) has established a dedicated Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN) Working Group. This group focuses on addressing the unique challenges and requirements of the aviation industry in the development and integration of 3GPP-specified 5G NTN. Their inaugural white paper outlines key considerations for applying 5G NTN to Inflight Connectivity (IFC), paving the way for a fully interoperable solution.
Olivier Hauw, Fast Track Leader Connectivity at Airbus and co-chair of the SAA NTN Working Group emphasized, “5G NTN provides an opportunity to harmonize IFC standards and overcome the limitations of proprietary satellite technologies.” This harmonization, in turn, facilitates technology upgrades for airlines and promotes equipment interchangeability.
Rubén Díaz Calvo, Principal Technology Platform Manager at Vodafone and co-chair of the NTN Working Group invites stakeholders from aviation, telecom, satellite, and connectivity sectors to join the Alliance and contribute to standards development. He highlighted the group’s commitment to evolving studies on 5G NTN connectivity for the aviation industry and presenting findings to 3GPP.
Jack Mandala, CEO of the Seamless Air Alliance, recognized the importance of delivering exceptional inflight internet experiences, especially with global aviation passenger traffic projected to reach 9.4 billion this year. Mandala expressed gratitude to member organizations for their dedication to simplifying access for passengers and exceeding their expectations.
Celebrating its 6th anniversary since its launch at the Mobile World Congress in 2018, SAA stands as a robust, member-driven organization. With seven specialized working groups led by experts in telecommunications, aeronautics, and connectivity technologies, and over 200 participating member-company resources, SAA is actively finalizing Seamless Release 7 and progressing with Seamless Release 8, which includes the study of aviation use cases for 5G NTN.
SAA’s membership includes key players in the aviation industry, such as airlines, airframe manufacturers, connectivity service providers, satellite operators, and equipment suppliers. Together, they are propelling advancements in innovative, high-performance, and affordable inflight connectivity services.
