SkyDrive Inc., a leading Japanese manufacturer of electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, has announced a strategic partnership with SAI Flight, one of South Carolina’s largest private jet charter companies, and Greenville Downtown Airport, the state’s busiest general aviation hub. The trio has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to explore innovative applications for SkyDrive’s advanced eVTOL technology, focusing on air cargo, air taxi services, and emergency response solutions.
The collaboration aims to create practical, community-focused use cases for eVTOLs, with Greenville Downtown Airport serving as the central operational hub. Together with local and state government agencies, as well as business leaders, the partners are working on designing efficient routes, including connections to Greenville’s city center and Greenville–Spartanburg International Airport. This initiative positions Greenville as a trailblazer in integrating Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) solutions, setting a benchmark for other airports in the state.
Expanding SkyDrive’s U.S. Presence
Since establishing a U.S. base in January 2023, SkyDrive has made significant strides in entering the American market. By forming alliances with key stakeholders, including government entities, airports, and airline companies, SkyDrive has laid the groundwork for the commercial adoption of its cutting-edge eVTOL technology. This partnership with SAI Flight and Greenville Downtown Airport marks a critical step forward in their mission to redefine air mobility in South Carolina.
SAI Flight’s Commitment to eVTOL Integration
SAI Flight Services, headquartered at Greenville Downtown Airport, will oversee operations and maintenance of the eVTOL fleet, ensuring reliable and efficient service. As a leader in private air charter services, SAI has demonstrated its commitment to the future of air travel by pre-ordering 10 SkyDrive eVTOL aircraft. Leveraging its Part 135 Air Carrier Certificate, SAI plans to seamlessly integrate eVTOL operations into its existing portfolio, providing flexible and on-demand air mobility solutions to meet evolving customer needs.
Greenville Downtown Airport: A Hub for Advanced Air Mobility
With its strategic location and status as South Carolina’s busiest general aviation airport, Greenville Downtown Airport (GMU) is well-positioned to spearhead the adoption of AAM solutions. GMU is actively preparing to accommodate eVTOL aircraft for short, medium, and long-range routes, reinforcing its role as a vital hub for the future of sustainable air transportation in the region.
State-Level Support Driving Innovation
The state of South Carolina has been a steadfast supporter of SkyDrive’s vision for advanced air mobility. By fostering innovation and investing in infrastructure, the state is building a strong foundation for sustainable air travel. This partnership is set to create jobs, stimulate economic growth, and promote cutting-edge technology, further solidifying South Carolina’s position as a leader in the AAM sector.
SkyDrive’s collaboration with SAI Flight and Greenville Downtown Airport is poised to transform air travel in the Greenville community, paving the way for a sustainable, efficient, and versatile future in transportation. This partnership reflects a shared commitment to innovation and positions South Carolina at the forefront of the global AAM revolution.
