Tom’s Truck Center Becomes First U.S. Commercial Truck Dealer to Offer Onsite Hydrogen Refueling

Tom’s Truck Center, a leading name in commercial truck sales and service and a key member of the Nikola sales and service dealer network, has launched the first onsite hydrogen refueling station at a commercial truck dealership. Located at Tom’s Truck Center’s Santa Fe Springs facility in Los Angeles County, the Nikola HYLA modular hydrogen refueling station is strategically placed along Highway 5, one of the busiest highways in the U.S., making it a prime spot for heavy-duty transportation.

“California is laying the foundation for a hydrogen-powered future, and we are proud to help drive this transition,” said KC Heidler, President and CEO of Tom’s Truck Center.

The high-pressure (700-bar) refueling station is designed to serve up to 30 trucks daily, ensuring minimal downtime with refueling hours from Monday through Friday, 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. The station is staffed with dedicated HYLA Ambassadors and Operations Technicians to provide efficient service for trucks like the Nikola hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle. The convenient location along Highway 5 enables faster refueling for heavy-duty trucks, helping keep them on the road longer.

“This station allows us to support our customers who choose hydrogen units by offering the necessary infrastructure,” Heidler added. “By partnering with HYLA and making hydrogen refueling accessible, we’re significantly reducing carbon emissions, improving air quality, and setting new standards in clean transportation.”

Several notable figures attended the station’s unveiling, including State Senators Josh Newman and Bob Archuleta, Santa Fe Springs City Manager Rene Bobadilla, and representatives from the California Air Resources Board (CARB). Senator Newman highlighted the station as an important step in California’s commitment to decarbonizing the transportation sector, emphasizing the role hydrogen and fuel technology play in achieving the state’s zero-emission goals.

Tom’s Truck Center is committed to providing comprehensive support for zero-emission vehicles, including sales, rentals, leasing, and service for EV and hydrogen trucks of all sizes. They also assist customers in navigating government incentive programs and offer various charging solutions. The HYLA modular refueling station marks the beginning of Tom’s long-term plans, which include the development of a permanent hydrogen refueling station set to be completed by the end of 2026.

In addition to this new station, other HYLA hydrogen refueling sites in California include locations in Long Beach and Ontario, with plans to have 14 operational stations by the end of 2024.
