U-Haul® has announced exciting plans to expand its services with the development of a new retail, moving, and self-storage center in Oakland, Maryland, located conveniently off Garrett Highway and Glendale Road. The facility, named U-Haul Moving & Storage of Deep Creek Lake, is set to open by January 2026. The company acquired the 2.5-acre site on October 22, 2023, marking a significant step in providing more accessible moving and storage solutions for the region.
The new center will feature a state-of-the-art, four-story building designed to offer a total of 980 self-storage units. These units will be equipped with high-tech security features, ensuring a safe environment for customers’ belongings. The facility will provide a variety of storage options, including both climate-controlled and non-climate-controlled units, catering to the diverse needs of local residents and businesses.
Beyond self-storage, U-Haul Moving & Storage of Deep Creek Lake will offer an array of additional services. These include truck and trailer rentals, professional hitch installation, and towing accessories. There will also be a retail showroom offering boxes, packing materials, and other moving supplies. For customers’ convenience, a covered drive-in load/unload area will be available, making it easier to store and access their belongings. In the future, propane sales will also be added to the list of services.
While the new facility is under construction, U-Haul has ensured that customers in the Oakland area will still have access to a variety of mobility services. Three U-Haul dealer sites in Oakland, along with additional locations in nearby communities, will remain operational, providing truck and trailer rentals, along with other essential services. Customers can easily find rental locations through the U-Haul website at uhaul.com/locations.
“Oakland is a beautiful resort town and a popular second-home community that attracts many outdoor enthusiasts, particularly with its proximity to Deep Creek Lake,” said Russ Tolley, President of U-Haul Company of Western Maryland. “This new location will provide essential moving and storage services to an area that has long been underserved. With the closest full-service U-Haul store being over 50 miles away, we are excited to bring a convenient and accessible option to our neighbors.”
With 44 company-operated stores currently in Maryland, U-Haul’s new store in Oakland represents a strategic expansion to meet the growing demand for moving and storage services in western Maryland. When completed, the facility will create local jobs, as U-Haul plans to hire up to 10 team members to staff the location. In keeping with its commitment to promoting local employment, U-Haul will prioritize hiring residents of Oakland and surrounding communities.
U-Haul is also committed to supporting military veterans and has been recognized by The Military Times as a “Best for Vets” employer.
