Westport Fuel Systems Inc. has announced the successful completion of a heavy transport demonstration in Älmhult, Sweden. Partnering with KAJ Inrikes and other key players, Westport showcased its H2 HPDI™ fuel system-equipped prototype truck hauling an IKEA trailer. This marks the second validation of the H2 HPDI system in a major fleet within the last 60 days, highlighting a significant stride in decarbonizing the heavy-duty transport industry.
During the event, the complete hydrogen ecosystem was represented, involving green hydrogen production, filling stations, Westport’s HPDI technology, vehicle manufacturers, fleet operators, and end-user IKEA.
Ola Henriksson, Senior Product Manager at Scania, expressed appreciation for the collaborative initiative, emphasizing the attractiveness of hydrogen in internal combustion engines for its decarbonization potential.
The collaboration includes KAJ Inrikes, Smålandslogistik, Metacon AB, and Hydri AB, each contributing to different aspects of the hydrogen ecosystem. Westport’s H2 HPDI fuel system proves to be a robust and affordable solution, offering higher power and torque than diesel engines.
Kaj Johansson, President of KAJ Inrikes, highlighted their commitment to emissions reduction and the efficiency of Westport’s technology in supporting IKEA’s transport decarbonization goals.
Anders Johansson, Vice President of Heavy-Duty OEM for Westport, acknowledged the challenge of decarbonizing heavy transport fleets and emphasized the viability and affordability of sustainable technologies.
IKEA’s Michal Silhacek expressed interest in exploring the role of hydrogen-powered vehicles in their zero-emission transportation future.
Smålandslogistik’s Nicklas Svensson praised the efficiency, performance, and adaptability of Westport’s system, aligning with their vision of fuel self-sufficiency.
Metacon’s Christer Wikner highlighted the transformative potential of Westport’s technology in powering heavy-duty vehicles with hydrogen.
