Wabtec Corporation Secures Noteworthy Contract to Deliver Eco-friendly Heating, Ventilation, and Air-Conditioning (HVAC) Units Alongside Efficient Door Systems for Norske Tog’s Latest Regional Train Fleet. The cutting-edge doors and Green Air HVAC systems promise enhanced cost-effectiveness, efficiency, sustainability, and an elevated passenger journey.
This latest contract marks a significant stride in advancing our technology solutions within the transit market,” stated Pascal Schweitzer, President of Wabtec’s Transit business. “It further solidifies our robust collaboration with Alstom to support Norske Tog in achieving its objectives. Our solutions are poised to deliver unparalleled performance in comfort, cost-effectiveness, environmental sustainability, operability, and safety.”
Under the agreement, Wabtec will supply components to Alstom, the recipient of a contract for the delivery of up to 200 Coradia Stream™ regional trains for Norske Tog. Wabtec’s contribution includes 180 saloon and 60 cab HVAC units for the initial train batch, in addition to 720 door systems and gap fillers. Initial deliveries are anticipated in early 2024.
Wabtec’s Green Air solution has set a new benchmark for natural refrigerant HVAC systems in the transit rail industry. Notably, it stands as the first air conditioning system in the industry to utilize natural R290 refrigerant, offering a clean and environmentally friendly alternative. The R290 refrigerant used in the Green Air system boasts a minimal Global Warming Potential (GWP) of 0.02, in stark contrast to traditional HVAC systems that employ synthetic refrigerants like R-134a, which carries a GWP of 1430. The adoption of R290-based solutions contributes significantly to reducing heat-trapping emissions in the atmosphere.
Beyond environmental benefits, the Green Air solution also provides operational advantages, including up to 30 percent weight savings compared to CO2 applications, and a 50 percent reduction in filling charge compared to 513a refrigerant.
Schweitzer remarked, “Norske Tog is a trailblazer in the industry, embracing cutting-edge technologies to enhance its operations and customer experience. Their trains will be among the first to enjoy the advantages of our Green Air solution.”
In addition to the innovative HVAC system, the trains will feature Wabtec’s double-sliding door, powered by the ESP4C operator. This design boasts a 30 percent reduction in size and a 20kg weight reduction compared to previous iterations, resulting in space, energy, and cost savings. Equipped with a sliding step and a range of special features such as touchless passenger detection, sustainable painting systems, and high performance in low-temperature conditions, the doors ensure reliability in challenging environments and all-weather accessibility. The door system will also integrate cybersecure-ready DLCNext+ control units.
Alstom is slated to commence deliveries of the new trains to Norske Tog in 2025. Once in operation, this cutting-edge fleet will provide suburban and fast rail services, linking Ski and Stabekk in the greater Oslo region.
