
Sensofusion Expands into Aerospace with Swift Surveillance Aircraft and Fennec Satellite Missions
Finnish defence technology company Sensofusion Oy has announced a major expansion of its operations beyond terrestrial security systems, unveiling a new aerospace-focused business unit that will combine aviation and space-based surveillance technologies under a single banner. The newly established division, known as Sensofusion Aerospace, represents the company’s strategic move from ground-based monitoring and counter-drone solutions into airborne intelligence gathering and satellite-enabled signal surveillance.
The announcement marks a significant milestone for the company as it broadens its technological capabilities from operating on the ground to deploying advanced systems in the air and eventually in Earth orbit. Through the development of the Sensofusion Swift surveillance aircraft and the company’s first satellite missions, Fennec-1 and Fennec-2, Sensofusion aims to create a multi-layered intelligence and monitoring network capable of operating across land, air, and space domains.
Building a Multi-Domain Surveillance Ecosystem
For years, Sensofusion has been recognized for its expertise in airspace security and counter-drone technologies, particularly through its Airfence system. As drone activity and electronic warfare threats continue to evolve, the company believes that effective monitoring requires sensor coverage across multiple operational environments.
The formation of Sensofusion Aerospace reflects this vision. The aircraft is already type-certified within the general aviation category, enabling it to operate in civilian airspace under existing aviation regulations. This certification provides a major operational advantage because the aircraft can conduct missions near airports, urban environments, and populated areas without requiring the extensive exemptions often necessary for unmanned systems.

Built on the Proven Atol Aurora Platform
The Swift surveillance aircraft is based on the Atol Aurora, a Finnish-designed aircraft known for its versatility and performance.
Sensofusion strengthened its aerospace ambitions in spring 2026 through the acquisition of Atol Aviation, the Finnish aircraft manufacturer responsible for the Aurora platform. The acquisition provided Sensofusion with direct access to aircraft design expertise, manufacturing capabilities, and an established aviation technology foundation.
Production of new Swift aircraft now takes place at Halli Airport in Finland. The facility carries historical significance as a former Finnish Air Force base and provides an ideal location for aerospace manufacturing and testing activities.
By bringing aircraft production in-house, Sensofusion gains greater control over design modifications, mission system integration, quality assurance, and future platform development.
The manufacturing operation also positions the company to scale production as demand grows from both domestic and international customers.
Advanced Intelligence and Counter-Drone Capabilities
The Swift platform is designed to serve as more than a conventional surveillance aircraft. It is being developed as a sophisticated airborne intelligence collection system capable of carrying a broad range of advanced sensors and mission equipment.
A key component of the aircraft’s capabilities is the integration of Sensofusion’s established Airfence counter-drone technology. Airfence has already gained recognition as an effective solution for detecting, tracking, and mitigating unauthorized drone activity.
By installing the system onboard an aircraft, Sensofusion can dramatically expand the operational reach of drone detection and airspace monitoring missions.
Airborne surveillance offers a substantial performance advantage compared to ground-based systems. According to the company, sensors mounted on an aircraft can achieve detection ranges that are typically three to five times greater than those available from sensors positioned on the ground.
The Swift platform will also incorporate additional mission systems, including radar technology and interceptor-drone capabilities. These enhancements are intended to provide a comprehensive surveillance and security solution capable of detecting, identifying, tracking, and potentially responding to aerial threats.
The aircraft’s sensor suite is expected to support a wide variety of missions, including border surveillance, critical infrastructure protection, maritime monitoring, signals intelligence collection, and military reconnaissance operations.
Expanding Beyond the Atmosphere
While the Swift aircraft represents Sensofusion’s immediate entry into aviation, the company’s long-term ambitions extend much further—into space.
The aerospace division is simultaneously advancing development of two satellite missions known as Fennec-1 and Fennec-2, which will form the foundation of the company’s future orbital surveillance capabilities.
The satellite program is intended to demonstrate Sensofusion’s ability to detect and analyze weak terrestrial signals from space. Successfully accomplishing this objective would significantly expand the company’s monitoring coverage beyond what can be achieved through ground-based and airborne systems alone.
Fennec-1: Demonstrating Space-Based Signal Detection
Fennec-1 will serve as Sensofusion’s first satellite mission and a critical proof-of-concept platform.
The primary objective of the satellite is to validate technologies capable of detecting weak signals originating from the Earth’s surface while operating in orbit. Achieving reliable signal detection from such distances presents significant technical challenges, making the mission an important step in demonstrating the company’s capabilities.

Sensofusion plans to launch the satellite aboard a SpaceX Falcon rocket in the autumn of 2027, marking the company’s first venture into orbital operations.
