- Ten-year power purchase agreement (PPA) for around 35 GWh of renewable electricity annually
- Newly built wind park in Schleswig-Holstein to supply around 8% of DHL Group’s electricity needs in Germany
- Onshore agreement complements previously secured offshore PPAs
DHL Group has strengthened its renewable energy strategy in Germany by signing a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) with Statkraft, one of Europe’s leading renewable energy providers. The ten-year agreement marks DHL Group’s first long-term onshore wind power purchase agreement in Germany, representing another significant milestone in the company’s efforts to reduce carbon emissions and transition toward cleaner energy sources.
The agreement, which commenced in February, enables Statkraft to supply approximately 35 GWh of renewable electricity each year to DHL Group. The clean electricity will cover around 8% of the company’s current electricity demand in Germany, supporting its broader sustainability and decarbonization objectives.
The renewable electricity supplied under the agreement is generated by the Sollwitt-Pobüll onshore wind farm in Schleswig-Holstein, northern Germany. Commissioned in 2025, the wind park has an installed generation capacity of 13.2 MW and contributes new renewable energy capacity to Germany’s electricity network. By sourcing electricity directly from this newly built project, DHL Group is supporting the expansion of renewable energy infrastructure while securing a reliable long-term supply of green power.
The partnership represents an important evolution of DHL Group’s renewable energy procurement strategy. While the company has already invested in offshore wind power purchase agreements in Germany, the addition of an onshore wind project diversifies its renewable energy portfolio. This broader mix of renewable energy sources helps strengthen supply security, improve operational resilience, and reduce dependence on a single technology or energy source.
Another notable aspect of the agreement is that the electricity originates from a project operating outside Germany’s Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG) subsidy framework. By purchasing electricity from a merchant renewable energy project rather than relying on subsidized generation, DHL Group is directly supporting the development of new renewable capacity while encouraging greater market-driven investment in clean energy projects.
The agreement also provides DHL Group with enhanced long-term price stability. Power purchase agreements have become an increasingly popular mechanism for large industrial companies seeking to manage energy costs while achieving ambitious sustainability targets. Through fixed long-term contracts, organizations can reduce exposure to electricity market volatility and gain greater predictability in their operational expenses.
Anna Spinelli, Chief Procurement Officer and Head of Mobility at DHL Group, described the agreement as an important milestone in the company’s energy transition.
“This agreement is an important milestone for our energy strategy in Germany. By adding our first onshore wind PPA, we are strengthening the resilience of our energy supply and directly supporting new, renewable capacity in Germany. Together with our offshore PPAs, this takes us another major step closer to decarbonizing our operations.”
The agreement reflects DHL Group’s wider commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions across its global logistics network. As demand for transportation and logistics services continues to grow, companies across the sector are increasingly investing in renewable electricity, sustainable fuels, and energy-efficient operations to minimize their environmental impact.
For Statkraft, the partnership further strengthens its position as one of Europe’s leading providers of tailored renewable energy solutions and long-term power purchase agreements. The company has been expanding its portfolio of customized PPAs across multiple industries, helping businesses secure renewable electricity while supporting the development of new wind and solar projects.
By working with DHL Group, Statkraft is also expanding its presence within the logistics industry, a sector that plays an increasingly important role in Europe’s energy transition due to its substantial electricity consumption and growing focus on sustainability.
Patrick Koch, Head of German Origination at Statkraft, highlighted the significance of the collaboration.
“With its energy requirement, the logistics industry is a key player in the energy transition. We are delighted to have DHL, one of the world’s leading players in this industry, as our partner. Our PPA model combines several advantages: long-term price security, access to renewable electricity from new wind turbines, and a tailor-made solution adapted to DHL Group’s specific preferences.”
The agreement demonstrates how long-term renewable energy partnerships can deliver benefits for both energy producers and corporate customers. While Statkraft secures a stable long-term customer for electricity generated by its wind assets, DHL Group gains reliable access to renewable power that supports its climate strategy and operational requirements.
In addition to increasing the share of renewable electricity used across its German operations, the contract complements DHL Group’s existing offshore wind PPAs by creating a more diversified renewable energy portfolio. Combining electricity from both offshore and onshore wind projects enables the company to strengthen local sourcing, improve supply reliability, and reduce exposure to fluctuations in electricity prices.
As companies across Europe continue accelerating their sustainability initiatives, long-term power purchase agreements are becoming a key instrument for driving investment in renewable energy infrastructure. The partnership between DHL Group and Statkraft highlights how collaboration between major industrial energy consumers and renewable power producers can support national decarbonization goals while delivering economic and environmental value.
With this latest agreement, DHL Group reinforces its commitment to achieving lower carbon emissions, strengthening energy resilience, and contributing to Germany’s transition toward a cleaner and more sustainable energy future. The project also illustrates the growing role that corporate renewable energy procurement will play in expanding Europe’s renewable generation capacity over the coming years.
